How Pathology Lab Tests Can Help Your Life
2
About Pathology Lab Tests
  • Pathology Lab Tests are tests that are conducted
to ascertain the state of health of the body
through analysis of urine, faeces, blood, or
    other samples obtained through biopsy.
  • Research has shown that over 500 million
pathology tests are ordered every month all over
the world. These tests are conducted in pathology
laboratories to diagnose symptoms of various
diseases and health conditions including malaria,
cancers, diabetes, HIV and AIDS, hepatitis,
cholesterol, etc. They are conducted by
    laboratory technicians, technologists, and their
assistants. The results are usually expressed in
lab reports or results which are usually only
    interpreted correctly by qualified medical
    personnel.

3
Kidney Function Tests
  • These tests are carried out on blood and urine
samples to determine the proper functioning of
the kidneys in eliminating waste products like
urea from the body. These tests include blood
urea nitrogen (BUN) test and the Creatinine test.
Their results show the unhealthy state of the
kidney and the presence of a kidney disease such
    as kidney stones.

4
Liver Function Tests
  • Liver Function Tests (LFT) include a range of
blood tests that are used to identify the
symptoms of liver diseases or to determine the
overall state of health of the liver. These tests
determine the amounts of proteins, enzymes, and
other substances that the liver excretes.
  • Liver diseases are usually very dangerous and
early detection and treatment could be the life
    saver.

5
Full Blood Examination
  • These include a series of tests that are used to
determine the proper functioning of the blood. It
is also called the Full Blood Count test and
shows the rate of development of healthy red
blood cells for oxygen distribution. It also
gives information about the development of the
white blood cells that aid the body to fight
infections, and the platelets which help in blood
    clotting.
  • The results of these tests show deficiencies in
the blood which can be the evidence of such
    abnormalities like leukaemia, anaemia, sickle
cell disease, or any other underlying disease.
The blood content can also be as a result of
certain medications, nutrition, or from exposure
    to harmful substances.

6
Urinalysis
  • This include a series of tests that are conducted
on urine samples to determine the presence of
    diseases, metabolic disorders (e.g. diabetes),
and disorders of the kidneys. They include tests
for urinary tract infections (UTIs), tests for
urine protein especially in pregnant women, etc.

7
Tests For Iron
  • These are conducted to determine if the body has
too much iron or too little. Iron is important in
the body for the healthy development of red blood
cells and proper oxygen distribution. If the
level is too high, there is exposure to heart
failure, liver diseases, arthritis, etc. Too
little iron causes weakness, fatigue, etc.

8
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) Quantification
  • This is used to check for thyroid disorders such
as hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid hormone) and
    hypothyroidism (insufficient thyroid hormone).
Thyroid hormones are important for good body
weight, heart rate, and body weight. They can be
affected by certain nutrition, medication, or
pregnancy. The pituitary gland produces the
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). This hormone
tells the thyroid gland when to produce more
hormones and when to produce less.
