Title: Blade Types!

1
Blade Types
  • Carbon Steel vs. Stainless Steel

2
Blade Composition
  • The essential elements of a steel are iron and
    carbon.
  • Higher carbon content steel is hard and brittle.
  • Lower carbon content steel is ductile and tough

Carbon Steel
  • Composition
  • High Carbon Steel
  • Low Carbon Steel
  • Composed of iron and 0.12 2.00 carbon.
  • Also includes alloy steel with up to 10.5 alloy
    content.
  • Even under 2 point of carbon, physical
characteristic varies most likely in terms of
    hardness.
  • Carbon steel is usually referred to as High
    Carbon Steel.
  • It is very hard, resists abrasion, retains its
    shape.
  • Can withstand significant force.
  • Since hard metals are brittle as well under
    extreme tensile stress.
  • Therefore, the high carbon steel is most likely
    to crack up.
  • Low carbon steel is more common.
  • It has a low production cost.
  • Greater ductility.
  • It is easy to use in manufacturing.
  • Low carbon steel deforms instead of breaking
    under extreme stress.

5
Stainless Steel
  • Composition
  • Function
  • Quality
  • Contains iron, carbon, and at least 10.5
    chromium content.
  • Chromium is the key.
  • Chromium reacts with the oxygen and creates a
passive layer that protects the steel from
    corrosion.
  • The chromium protection helps the steel to
function in a wet environment without corroding
    or rusting.
  • High chromium content means the steel is more
    corrosion resistant.
  • A stainless steel with a minimum of 10.5
chromium content is cheaper and less durable.
  • A stainless steel with 16 chromium content has
more maintenance cost but has a longer and better
    service life.
