What are the concept of surrogacy and its types?
Surrogacy is a concept which is supported by a
legal agreement where a woman agrees to become
pregnant, carry the pregnancy in her womb for the
women who is unable to carry the pregnancy in her
womb due to some medical illness. According to
the study, people may seek for the surrogacy
treatment when pregnancy is medically impossible
for them or when the same-sex couple wishes to
have a baby or man alone wish to have a baby for

Types of Surrogacy
There are mainly two types of surrogacy procedure
which is (i) traditional surrogacy and (ii)
gestational surrogacy. Altruistic and
independent surrogacy procedures can fall under
either type of the surrogacy procedure

(i) Traditional Surrogacy
In traditional surrogacy, the fertility expert
Dr. Nalini Gupta at Select IVF India will use the
eggs of surrogate mother and fertilize them with
the sperm of intended father to facilitate the
fertilization. This is a procedure where the
surrogate is the biological mother of the baby
born as her eggs were used for fertilization.
Once the fertilization takes place the resulted
embryo will be placed into the uterus of
surrogate mother and she will carry the baby in
her womb until the baby delivery.

(ii) Gestational Surrogacy
In this procedure, Dr. Nalini Gupta the fertility
specialist will collect the eggs from the
intended mother and fertilize them with the sperm
of intended father to facilitate fertilization.
With gestational surrogacy the couples will have
their own biological baby as the eggs and sperm
of the intended parents are used for
fertilization and surrogate has no relationship
with the baby born. Once the fertilization takes
place, the resulted embryo will be placed into
the uterus of surrogate mother and she will carry
the baby in her womb for nine months and after
the baby born she will hand-over the baby to
his/her intended parents.

(iii) Altruistic Surrogacy
This is a surrogacy procedure where a woman
agrees to be a surrogate mother without being
compensated. There are surrogacy procedures where
women get compensation for their services but
altruistic surrogacy is a procedure where woman
are typically helping someone they know such as a
close friend or relative and they receive the
reimbursement only for their medical costs.

(iv) Independent Surrogacy
Independent surrogacy is much like traditional
surrogacy this procedure of surrogacy runs a
whole host of legal risks. In independent
surrogacy, the surrogate mother is working
without any support and expertise of an agency
and she often goes through the process for
someone she already knows.
