Introduction
  • Plastering has been used since the ancient
    civilizations to construct structures.
  • Back then, the early men used mud to make them
    durable and water resistant.
  • Advancement of science and technology over the
millenniums has led to an evolution in plastering
    as well.
  • The mud of the early men was replaced by the
plaster by the end of the nineteenth century.

3
  • Plaster is a mineral coating used for covering
rough surfaces of walls, columns, ceilings and
    other building components.
  • A thin coat of plastic mortars is applied to make
the level of masonry surfaces even and smooth.
  • The coating of plastic material (i.e. mortar) is
    termed as Plaster.

4
Purpose Of Plastering
  • It gives a smooth and hard surface that could be
painted and provide nice aesthetic appearances.
  • Plaster has been subjected to substantial
variations with regards to its composition and
    its variations.
  • The widespread use of plaster coating has
    increased because
  • It is economical
  • It is easy to prepare
  • It is easy to apply

5
  • Plaster is manufactured as a dry powder and is
mixed with water to make a hard and efficient
paste before applying it to the surface.
  • Plaster is used in every kind of construction
works as it offers many benefits.
  • It provides a smooth, regular, clean and durable
    finished surface with improved appearance.
  • It covers the bare stone or bricks on the walls
of construction, both inside and outside.
  • It increases the strength of the wall and
protects the surface from atmospheric influences.

Different Types Of Plastering
  • 1. Cement Plaster
  • This type of plaster is a mixture of sand,
Portland cement and water. It is particularly
used for construction work as a binder.
  • Cement plaster is usually applied in one coat to
    achieve smooth surfaces internally and
    externally.
  • Coats thickness also depends on building type or
    the conditions of a site.
  • It is mostly suitable plaster for dampness or
    moist weather.

7
  • 2. Lime Plaster
  • This basically consists of sand, hydrated lime
    and water.
  • Lime is used as a binder to give a finish coat.
  • Lime plaster mortar is prepared by mixing lime
    and sand in equal proportions.
  • Little quantity of cement is added to it, to
    improve strength.
  • Lime plaster could be used for the restoration
    and rehabilitation of ancient structures.

8
  • 3. Stucco Plaster
  • Stucco is material made up of aggregates, binder
    and water.
  • It is applied as wet and hardens to a dense
    solid.
  • Stucco plaster is used as a decorative coating
for walls ceilings and an artistic material in
    the architecture.
  • The thickness of stucco plaster is generally
    three-layered coating process.

9
  • 4. Mud Plaster
  • This type of plaster is prepared with the help of
clay, loose soil and cow dung.
  • All these ingredients are mixed thoroughly and
are left for 7 days with a huge amount of water.
  • Mud plaster is one of oldest and cheapest way of
plastering low-cost houses in rural areas.
  • It is usually applied in two coats.

10
CONCLUSION
  • Plastering is an important part while
    constructing structures.
  • Types of plastering and its application vary
depending on the surface of the wall or ceiling
    which needs to be plastered.
  • It is done extensively to give an attractive
    appearance to buildings internally and
    externally.
