2
What are Fibroids?
They are benign non-cancerous growths of uterine
muscles. They are tumors formed when a single
cell of uterine muscle multiplies. Fibroids
generally appear as multiple tumors, though a
single fibroid is not rare.
3
What are the symptoms of Fibroids?
  • Heavy bleeding during or even in between periods
  • Excessive pelvic cramping
  • Painful intercourse
  • Lower back and leg pain
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Miscarriages
  • Constipation or frequent urge to urinate

4
How can Fibroids affect fertility in women?
  • They can bring in change in the shape or position
of the cervix or uterus hampering the proper
    movement of the sperm.
  • Can block the fallopian tubes and
    prevents Fertility.
  • Prevents smooth blood flow to the uterus that is
    required to initiate implant
  • Brings changes in the uterine muscles that affect
the proper sperm and embryo movement

5
Who are generally at the risk of having fibroids?
  • Women in the age group of 30-40 often develop
    these growths
  • Women with family history of fibroid are at three
times greater risks of having them
  • Obese women often have higher chances of fibroids
  • Women having a lot of meat (especially red meat)
and fewer vegetables might fall prey to these
    growths.

6
What are the risks associated with Fibroids?
These are common in about 2-12 of women. Though
most of them do not grow in size or interfere
with pregnancies. But some of them might overgrow
and suppress the blood supply to the uterus
resulting in unbearable pain leading to
hospitalization.
Some possible risks are
  • Change in the babys position at birth
  • Higher chances of cesearian section deliveries
  • Miscarriages
  • Preterm deliveries

7
How can fibroids be detected and cured?
They can be detected with the help of
  • Ultrasounds
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Hysterosalphinogram (HSG)
  • Hysterosonogram

8
What are the treatments associated with the
fibroids?
Surgeries like Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy are
generally done to remove fibroids. However, the
age of the patient, the position of the growth,
severity of the symptoms are some of the factors
that influence the mode of treatment.
Can the fibroids revert back again?
Yes, they can. However, chances of the re-growth
are minimal with Hysterectomy were a complete
removal of the growth is done.
Can Fibroids turn into Cancer?
No they dont. These are benign growths that
rarely turn to cancer neither they encourage the
chances of any other kind of cancerous growth in
the uterus or ovaries.
