• Coral is a structure made up of millions of very
  small marine animals called polyps. The length of
  the polyp, which has the shape of a tube, is only
  an inch. At the end of this tube is a mouth
  surrounded by tentacles delivering sea creatures
  to it.

• Coral reef is a mountain under water formed by
  skeletons of coral. Reefs also consist of other
  living things, such as algae or mollusks. Coral
  reefs have bright colors and can grow hundreds of
  years without being destroyed by the ocean.

• The coral reefs surrounding Seychelles have, from
  time immemorial, provided protection for fish,
  shellfish and many other marine creatures.

• This year the government of the Seychelles
  announced its first of a kind deal the country
  transferred a part of its public debt to
  investments in protecting marine resources.
  Environmentalists have already set up a series of
  reef restoration projects on 155 islands of this
  Indian Ocean archipelago.

• Coral Strand Hotel is a perfect spot for
  observing the reefs. There are a couple of great
  snorkeling spots just outside the hotel. One of
  them is Anse Major, a cozy bay in the northern
  part of Mahe Island, which can be reached on foot
  or by taxi from Beau Vallon. Anse Major Reef
  consists of well-preserved corals, which hide a
  large number of different species of fish.
