Introduction
  • Mammography or mammogram is an X-ray examination
    of the breast used to diagnose breast cancer. The
    following slides highlight a few important points
    that one must know before going for a mammography
    test.

Procedure
  • Mammography is done to get electronic pictures of
    the breasts that help in the detection of breast
    cancers, benign tumours, and cysts even before
    they can be detected by palpation (touch).
    Digital mammography can produce enhanced images
    that are quite beneficial for women who have
    dense breast tissue, are less than 50 years of
    age, or are at the premenopausal or
    perimenopausal stage.

Risk Factors
  • The risk of developing breast cancer may increase
    if an individual has a personal or family history
    of breast cancer. The risk of developing breast
    cancer also increases with age.

Symptoms
  • One must get a mammography test done if they
    observe the following symptoms
  • Palpable lump
  • Skin thickening or indentation around the
    breast(s)
  • Nipple discharge or retraction
  • Breast pain or tenderness

Things to Keep in Mind
  • Here are a few things that one must keep in mind
    before getting a mammography test done
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing.
  • Do not wear jewellery or piercings.
  • Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion on
    underarms or on breasts. (These may appear on the
    mammogram and interfere with correct diagnosis).
  • It is advised that one should avoid scheduling a
    mammogram test before and during menstruation.
