Researchers found that 77 of adult children

driving, medication, etc. or getting help with
daily problems. But theres way to deal with

Figure out how important the matter is. Its
important that you intervene if it is a safety
concern relating to dementia or Alzheimers.
Dont constantly nag them about updating their
phones, joining a fitness class, or other similar
tasks. Try to only bring attention to certain
ones, which is the only way your parents will
take your concerns seriously.
4
Its advisable that you find an outlet for your
feelings which can be in the form of a friend,
geriatric care manager, geriatrician, online
support group, sibling or therapist. These are
the people you should confide in or vent to if
youre angry or resentful that Moms not with the
program or taking her medication.
5
It is easy to become overwhelmed with
frustration, fear, and anxiety when constantly
dealing with their negative behaviour especially
if you act as the primary caregiver to your
parents. First you need to care for yourself and
keep yourself happy, then comes everything else.
6
Instead of getting frustrated or upset with your
parents about remembering important dates, help
them with that to avoid potential problems.
Remember, living with memory loss can be very
difficult for elderly adults to deal with even if
your loved one has not been diagnosed with
dementia or Alzheimers.
7
For everyone, aging is a difficult process so
take time to understand the motivation behind
your loved ones behaviour. Many older adults
live with dementia or mental health issues, so
you need to understand how your parents might be
feeling which can help reduce a lot of negative
emotions.
8
Do not infantilize parents, it is important to
remember that they are still your parents and
that they desire to be treated with respect. The
objective is to help your parents receive the
best care possible, so avoid behaviours such as
threatening to move a parent to a nursing
home/assisted living facility or insisting you
always know whats best. Plus, youre much more
likely to get positive results by treating your
aging parents like the adults they are.
