Geography of Salt Lake City
  • Salt Lake City is located in a large valley, the
    Salt Lake Valley, separated by the Wasatch
    Mountains to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains
    to the west. Salt Lake City is located at
    4045'17" North, 11153'33" West (40.754700,
    -111.892622)
  • According to the United States Census Bureau, the
    city has a total area of 285.9 km² (110.4 mi²).
    282.5 km² (109.1 mi²) of it is land and 3.3 km²
    (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17
    water.

Demography of Salt Lake City
  • US Census Bureau estimates for 2018 listed
    200,591 people in Salt Lake City. The racial
    makeup of the county was 65.4 non-Hispanic
    White, 2.3 Black, 1.5 Native American, 5.4
    Asian, 1.5 Pacific Islander, and 3.4 from two
    or more races. 21.6 of the population were
    Hispanic or Latino of any race.
  • At the 2010 census, Salt Lake City's population
    was 75.1 White, 2.6 African American, 1.2
    American Indian and Alaska Native, 4.4 Asian,
    2.0 Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander,
    10.7 from other races and 3.7 of mixed descent.

Government of Salt Lake City
  • The Salt Lake City and County Building has been
    the seat of city government since 1894. It also
    served as Utah's first statehouse from 1896 until
    the current Utah State Capitol was dedicated on
    October 9, 1916.
  • Since 1979, Salt Lake City has had a non-partisan
    mayor-council form of government. The mayor and
    the seven councillors are elected to staggered
    four-year terms. Council seats are defined by
    geographic population boundaries. Each councilor
    represents approximately 26,000 citizens.
    Officials are not subject to term limits.

Economy of Salt Lake City
  • The economy of Salt Lake City, Utah is primarily
    service-oriented. While nearby Bingham Canyon
    Mine (the world's largest open-pit mine) provided
    a strong source of income during the 19th
    century, the city has evolved to an economy built
    on transit hubs, call centers, and seasonal
    tourism. The 2002 Olympic Winter Games gave a
    great boost to the area's economy. Many hotels
    and restaurants were built for the 2002 Olympics,
    and although many survive, they have suffered
    post-Olympic market saturation.

Culture of Salt Lake City
  • Salt Lake City is home to several museums. Near
    Temple Square is the Church History Museum.
    Operated by the LDS Church, the museum contains
    collections of artifacts, documents, art,
    photographs, tools, clothing and furniture from
    the history of the LDS Church, which spans nearly
    two centuries.
  • Salt Lake City is home to several classic movie
    theaters including the Tower Theatre and the
    Broadway Theater, both of which host the Salt
    Lake Film Society members and shows.

  • Transportation in Salt Lake City consists of a
    wide network of roads, an extensive bus system, a
    light rail system, and a commuter rail line.
    Although Salt Lake City, Utah is a traditionally
    car-oriented city (as are most other cities in
    the western United States), the rapidly growing
    public transit system has a high number of riders
    for a city of its size, and public transit is
    widely supported by its residents and businesses.

Education in Salt Lake City
  • Education has always been a priority in the Salt
    Lake City, Utah. In 1847 pioneer Jane Dillworth
    held the first classes in her tent for the
    children of the first Mormon families. By 1850
    many schools had already sprung up around the
    valley, and there were plans for a school
    attached to every wardhouse.
  • In 1851 the territorial legislature passed the
    first public school law creating the office of
    the superintendent of schools. Many large Mormon
    families, such as Brigham Young's, had their own
    schools, known as "family schools".
