1
Wooden Beds - When, What, Why, And How? The bed
frame is the centrepiece of any bedroom. An ugly
looking bedframe can spoil the entire aesthetics
of the space. Also, if the bedframe is not
supportive even the best mattress that you have
purchased cannot give you a comfortable sleep. So
arguably, it is one of the most important
furniture pieces in your bedroom. Just like how
support and comfort are the basic thumb rule to
buy a mattress, the same applies to a bed. Next
comes the wooden bed design, price, and other
factors. One of the best woods for making beds is
Sheesham wood. What is Sheesham Wood?
It is known as the Indian Rosewood and is a tree
that is found mainly in India and part of Nepal
and Pakistan. It has its origins from Dalbergia
sissoo and is highly adaptable and can grow in
other parts of the world too. The tree is now
grown in some parts of Australia, the US, and
Africa and is considered as a premium quality
wood for making ornate carvings and
furniture. The tree though adaptable to various
conditions grows in both dry and wet regions. In
the wet regions, the trees can grow as tall as
30m while in the dry regions it grows up to 15
2
meters. Anatomically, the leaves of this tree are
compound, produce light pink-coloured flowers
and produce fruit which is light brown
pods. Sheesham Wood Appearance Sheesham though
not the hardest of wood is still considered as a
hardwood. It is highly regarded in India and is
believed to be auspicious. The heartwood of the
tree comes in various colours and ranges from
golden brown to reddish-brown. The sapwood is
golden straw-coloured and is used in furniture
sometimes. The Sheesham wood is not very porous
and has no specific arrangement but has few large
pores. The wood has natural beeswax and hence is
naturally beautiful. It has gums and other
deposits and hence is resistant to decay making
it highly durable. It has a natural and
distinctive scent that is not very strong but is
pleasant Since the tree grows tall, long
sections of timber are available and thus is
suitable for making all types of furniture. The
wood is such that it is easy to work with and can
be used under machines too.
There are many benefits of buying a genuine
Sheesham wooden bed, and some of them are
3
Last Longer When you buy a genuine Sheesham wood
bed you are buying something that will last
generations. That means these are environmentally
sustainable and one need not dispose them unless
you really want it. Affordable Sheesham is a
type of hardwood that is more affordable than
other types of hardwood like teak. So these
furniture pieces offer great value of money. That
does not mean you should compromise on anything
including looks. These woods are beautiful and
have darker streaks amidst the reddish-brown. So
whatever piece of furniture you buy will look
stylish and beautiful. Does not Decay One of
the best reasons to opt for Sheesham wood is that
it is resistant to decay. It does not split that
easily and even termites cannot get its way
through this wood. So apart from the wooden box
bed price being affordable, it is decay resistant
and hence offers an edge over other types of
wood. Various options The Sheesham wood is a
craftsman favourite as it can be easily carved
into ornate pieces. So due to the workability and
its durability, these can be used to manufacture
all types of furniture. This means that you can
have Sheesham wood furniture everywhere in the
house which includes a wooden double bed. Hence
there is not just continuity in terms of style
but also in terms of texture too. Low-maintenance
The bed made from Sheesham wood requires very
little maintenance as per the leading bed and
mattress manufacturer Wakefit. To clean the
furniture using a dry cotton cloth and wipe it
to remove the dust. If the furniture is a little
old, then you can clean it with some oil to give
a shine. Also, it is weatherproof and is a little
dry so the mildew accumulation is less. So if
you are looking for a low maintenance wood then
Sheesham wood is ideal. Considered auspicious
Sheesham wood is not just beautiful, affordable,
strong, and durable it is considered auspicious.
In some parts of India, this is associated with
good fortune and is believed to have spiritual
characteristics. That is one reason why most of
the temples have Sheesham wood constructions.
