• Yerba Mate or yerbay, also called matÉ or
  cimarron, is an authentic South American
  caffeine-rich tea. It is prepared by steeping dry
  leaves of the herb species Ilex paraguari in hot
  water and is usually served with a wooden stake
  or metal drinking utensil in a ceramic bowl.
  Sometimes it may be called yerba mate pot, yerba
  de Pollo or simply yerba mate. Yerba mate
  originates from the state of Mendoza in the
  northern region of Argentina and south of

• The origin of Yerba Mate's name is not clear. In
  most sources, the meaning of Yerba Mate is "hot
  drink of hot water". But the most accepted
  explanation is that the word mate is derived from
  the Quechua indigenous language which in the
  Quechua Indian language, specifically in the
  Huayna Native American language, means the "mat"
  or "the basin". So while the origin may be from
  the basin, the beverage itself came to be known
  as Yerba Mate after people began referring to it
  as such.

• Yerba Mate is caffeine free and has no calories,
  sodium, lactose or cholesterol. It is also
  considered to be a natural colon cleanser due to
  the high amounts of the "good bacteria" in the
  drink and the fact that many health products
  claim to use similar compounds to clean the colon
  of toxins and bacteria. Because it contains
  significant amounts of caffeine, however, this
  does not mean that drinking yerba mate is the
  fountain of youth as many health products claim.
  As with all products that claim to clean the body
  of impurities, a person must exercise caution
  when incorporating such drinks, especially if
  they have a medical condition or if they are
