Improving Patient Welfare with Health Care
Analytics
2
  • When used appropriately and effectively, data
analytics can vastly improve the care of patients
within the healthcare system, and as such, should
be invested in by health and welfare teams the
    world over.
  • Referring to the practice of gathering and
analyzing massive amounts of data to draw
significant insights and conclusions from the
information contained within it, data analytics
has come a long way in recent years, and is now
aided by new software and advanced technology
that makes the process more efficient.

3
  • The healthcare system as a whole has become
increasingly reliant on data, and data analytics
can help identify and resolve many issues, such
as the waste of resources, help to track the
performance of practitioners, and even monitor
and identify individuals within the wider
population who might be at risk of contracting or
inheriting certain, chronic diseases. Armed with
all of this information and valuable insights,
    over stretched and underperforming healthcare
systems can streamline the allocation of their
resources, helping to increase revenue, the
health of the population and of course, patient
    care and wellbeing.

4
  • Below are three ways that data analytics are
helping to improve the healthcare system and
    patient welfare
  • Practitioner performance can be better evaluated
  • Healthcare analytics can provide a new and
effective method of evaluating how a healthcare
practitioner is performing, and with ongoing
evaluations coupled with health data related to
patient wellness, it can be used to help provide
    ongoing feedback.

5
  • Enabling overall outcomes to determine payment
  • Measuring performance and valuing best practices
is closely linked to cost accounting, since
    outcome and value-based payment initiatives
provide an incentive for improving performances
in healthcare. So, rather than having the focus
be upon reimbursing individuals on a case-by-case
basis, the overall outcome would determine the
    payment.
  • Helping to identify patterns and trends that can
lead to a clearer, more rounded understanding of
the health of a population, ongoing healthcare
analytics and a system of interconnected
    electronic health records accessible to
physicians, can help reduce unnecessary care with
    its provision of detailed information.

6
  • The healthcare system is also better able to
reduce waste and maximize efficiency by
    allocating personnel and resources more
effectively, thanks to the trends in population
    outcomes identified by prescriptive analytics.
  • Risk prediction
  • Treating chronic diseases is one of the most
significant costs for the healthcare industry as
a whole, and when applied on a mass scale, the
costs associated with this can be reduced with
predictive analytics. It works by predicting
those patients who may be at higher risk of
    disease, and instigating early intervention
before any problems begin to develop.

7
  • Data related to a variety of factors, such as
    medical history, demographic or socio-economic
profile and comorbidities, is aggregated and the
metrics can be modeled to predict the risk of
    chronic disease in patients.
  • While improving patient welfare is of course in
the best interests of the patients themselves,
entire healthcare systems can benefit hugely from
data analytics, and thankfully, there are plenty
of reputable life sciences organizations out
there who can help healthcare management teams
manage their resources better, save money and
provide patients with a higher quality of care.
