Domain Name
  • A domain name refers to an identification string
    which is meant for specifying administrative
    autonomy within the World Wide Web. Different
    networking contexts use domain names and these
    are also used for naming which is
    application-specific. A network domain is
    identified by a domain name. An IP (Internet
    Protocol) resource is represented by it.
  • To digress, most web hosting companies provide
    services with regard to domain registration and
    transfer. Web hosting companies primarily offer
    the service of web hosting, wherein server space
    is provided for storing the files of websites.
    These files are delivered to users devices, over
    the Internet, to make websites accessible. The
    most popular web hosting companies are referred

  • Domain Privacy, which is also known as Whois
    privacy, is a service provided by various domain
    name registrars. Each and every domain name is
    listed in the WHOIS listing. A WHOIS listing is
    registered domains searchable database, which is
    available on the Internet.

    information is publicly accessible. When one
    purchases domain privacy, his/her information is
    replaced in the WHOIS with a forwarding services

  • WHOIS is a protocol that is query and response
    based and which stores as well as delivers the
    content of a database in a format that can be
    read by humans. It is used for the purpose of
    querying databases in which an Internet
    resources assignees or registered users are
    stored along with a wider range of information.

  • Many top-level domains have privacy caveats. Some
    of the domains that have some level of privacy or
    complete privacy by default are mentioned in this
    slide as well as in the following slide.
  • .al None of the owners information is
    disclosed
  • .at, .co.at, .or.at - The registrar hides the
    contact data that must be made public explicitly
  • .ca - Registration details are not posted by the
    Canadian Internet Registration Authority
  • .ch and .li Information is private and can be
    accessed only in very limited cases
  • .de As per the German Internet Registration
    Authority, third parties cannot access data
    related to domain ownership. But there are
    certain exceptions to it.
  • .eu Only the e-mail address is displayed in the
    records of public whois, unless specified
    otherwise, for a registrant who is a natural
    person
  • .fi An individuals data are not published. The
    data of associations, companies etc. are

  • .fr There is restricted publishing of domain
    name holders personal data in the AFNIC
    (Association Française pour le Nommage Internet
    en Coopération) public Whois
  • .gr None of the owners information is
    disclosed
  • .is- Might hide address and phone number
  • .nl The postal addresses of registrants are not
    publicly available
  • .ovh The registrar hides the contact data. The
    data must be made public explicitly
  • .uk Domain privacy tools are provided on the
    extensions (.co.uk, .me.uk etc.), when the
    registrant isnt trading from the domain name.
    The full name of the registrant cannot be hidden
    but the home address of the registrant can be
    hidden
  • .ro None of the information of the owner gets
    disclosed

Privacy Forbidden
  • Privacy is forbidden or limited for certain
    domains. Some of these are mentioned below, in no
    particular order.
  • .us As per the NTIA (National
    Telecommunications and Information
    Administration) the owners of .us domains do not
    have the option to keep their information
    private. It must be made public.
  • .in Indian domain names might not use any
    privacy services or proxy that is provided by
    registrars
  • .it As per law, Italian domain names cannot
    keep their information private
  • .au As per law, Australian domain names that
    end with .au cannot keep their information
    private. Most of the information is public while
    some information of the registrant is kept hidden
