2Keeping Safe from COVID-19 Precautions for
pregnant women and new mothers
The pandemic has put up a lot of questions to the
medical researchers and the medical fraternity as
a whole. Every patient or person with a condition
is very much eager to know the specifics of what
the COVID-19 virus could do to them or what
precautions should be taken by them specifically
to keep themselves from being infected by
Coronavirus. The threat from Coronavirus to a
pregnant woman is undoubtedly the most burning
question in the mind of every bearing woman or
new mother. This is more so as it does not affect
only the mother there is also a risk of the
newborn or the fetus being affected too.
Even though there are not enough studies to point
towards the infection of a fetus, newborns should
surely be kept protected from being infected.
3A pregnant lady, as such, is in a very vulnerable
state of her body where her body is going through
a lot of bodily changes. They are more prone to
infections during pregnancy and extra care should
be taken to see that the woman is kept away from
such environment and factors as far as possible.
4Most of the precautions to be taken during
pregnancy would be the same as that of a normal
person but even then they are worth mentioning
and emphasized in the case of a pregnant woman
due to her infection-prone condition.
Precautions to be taken by pregnant women against
Coronavirus is as below
- Frequent washing of hands. Hand hygiene is the
top priority in the fight against coronavirus. - Social distancing is another highly recommended
step in preventing and breaking the chain of the
infectious coronavirus. At least a distance of
6-8 feet is recommended in public places is the
parameter of social distancing. It is better not
to go to public places but if need may keep a
good distance from others as a precaution against
infection. - All vaccinations especially the flu vaccinations
to be taken in time. This may not protect you
from coronavirus but would make you less prone to
infections and viruses of those types which may
cause complications during pregnancy.
5- Respiratory hygiene or covering your nose and
mouth while coughing or sneezing is a must to
stop the spread of the virus through the air to a
bystander. Wash your hands immediately after
using napkins or a handkerchief to cover your
nose and mouth while coughing and sneezing.
6- No respiratory symptoms like persistent coughing
or respiratory distress is to be ignored. Consult
your doctor immediately, they are trained to
advise if these are normal respiratory disorders
or a COVID-19 symptom.
- It would be appropriate if you consult through
virtual means where ever possible to avoid
contact with other people while going for
consultation or while waiting for consultation.
Your prenatal visits to your gynecologist should
be made virtual if it is possible and if no need
is there for physical examination. Working
pregnant women should be working from home.
- Be more cautious when handling the newborn baby
during feeding and other time. Always clean your
hands before and after handling the baby.
- Dont be stressed out, hospitals are ready and
have proper systems in place to handle the
situation and will surely take care that you have
safe and proper care during your pregnancy
whenever you need to visit them.
Be safe, keep social distancing and be sanitized
is the key to prevent COVID-19.
