production of white button mushrooms is the
highest, with a share of about 73 of total
mushroom production. Of the total mushrooms
produced, white button mushroom bills for 73,
observed through oyster mushroom (16), paddy
straw mushroom (7), and milky mushroom (3).
  • 3. Current Status of mushroom business in India
In the 12 months 2016-2017, the Indian mushroom
enterprise generated an income of Rs. 7282.26
lakhs by exporting 1054 quintals of white button
mushroom in canned and frozen form. Considering
the production figures, the demand for spawn in
India is estimated to be around 8000-10000 tonnes
per year. At present, Himachal Pradesh,
    Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh,
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana
are the major mushroom growing states at the
trade level. To promote mushroom cultivation,
    agricultural universities and other training
    institutions conduct training programs on
subjects such as mushroom cultivation method,
    mushroom seed production technology, master
    trainer training, mushroom production, and
processing, etc. Women are also being encouraged
more for mushroom cultivation. Under this, the
state government is also giving a 50 percent

  • 4.Why it is not popular in India In India,
    though mushrooms are cultivated commercially
since the 1970s and 80s, their consumption is
hardly conspicuous till recently among the common
people. Compared to other vegetables The per
capita consumption of mushrooms in India is low
and information shows that it is much less than
100 grams per year. In traditional Indian food,
culture mushrooms are not so popular. mushroom as
a vegetable is yet to find a regular place among
the common people. Some people argue that
mushrooms are a form of fungus, some argue that
mushrooms are toxic. Some consider it as a
non-veg food. Because Mushrooms and meat items
are cooked similarly. This can be another reason
to associate mushrooms with meat. Sometimes
mushrooms are categorized as "tamasic foods" that
cause mental dullness and sedative effects on the
    body.

  • 7.Is mushroom farming viable on a small scale?
Mushroom cultivation doesn't need huge investment
in land or anything. Some space in their home can
be dedicated for this and grow as little as 5kg
per day. Mushroom cultivation is more profitable
in cities than in Villages. Considering the
selling cost at Rs.100-150 per kg you can make a
decent Rs.700 to 1000 per day. Mushroom as a
small business in India is still unexplored.
Mushroom has a good demand and growth
opportunity, both domestically and for exports,
yet to be explored. Mushroom cultivation in India
is growing gradually as an alternative source of
income for many people including farmers.
