Grades of Stainless Steel Nuts

• Stainless steel nuts are used in place of their
  steel counterparts for applications in outdoor
  environments. They include both standard nuts and
  self-locking nuts for applications that are also
  subject to vibration. The standard grade for
  stainless fasteners is Stainless Steel Nuts,
  which are the most typically stated grades.
  They're resistant to corrosion and long-lasting.
  They're commonly employed in freshwater marine
  applications, but they won't hold up in a
  saltwater environment as well as stainless steel.

• The major non-iron elements of Stainless Steel
  304 Hex Nuts are chromium (typically 18 percent)
  and nickel (usually 8 percent). When exposed to
  temperatures above 800 degrees F, Stainless Steel
  304H Heavy Hex Nuts provide better
  high-temperature strength. Where superior
  mechanical qualities at greater temperatures are
  required, Stainless Steel 304H Nylon Insert Nuts
  with a higher carbon content is typically
  selected. The oil refining, gas, and chemical
  industries all use stainless steel UNS S30409
  nuts.

• Stainless Steel 316 Heavy Hex Nuts are a
  molybdenum-containing austenitic chromium-nickel
  stainless steel. UNS S31600 Stainless Steel Nuts
  are commonly used in food preparation equipment,
  especially in chloride conditions. Because it is
  more resistant to pitting corrosion than other
  grades of steel, Stainless Material 316 Hex Nuts
  is the chosen steel for usage in maritime
  conditions.
