COULD UV RAYS BE CAUSING YOUR SHINGLES TO DEGRADE?

  • States such as Florida experience a lot of
sunshine, and many Florida homes succumb to high
levels of exposure from UV rays. Roofs with
asphalt shingles (as is a popular choice of
roofing material throughout Florida and across
the US) are known to break down and degrade much
faster due to the suns rays, and they may need
replacing far quicker than roofs in other, less
    sunny states.
  • How do UV rays cause shingles to degrade?
  • During the heat of the day, asphalt roofing
material tends to expand, and then it contracts
at night time, as the temperature drops. Over
time, this continual expansion and contraction of
the shingles causes them to degrade, and when
combined with the radiation from UV rays, it can
    end up destroying them completely.

3
  • Even on days when the sun doesnt make much of an
appearance, there may still be enough radiation
to gradually degrade the asphalt shingles on a
roof, and when the moisture from them evaporates,
they become brittle and highly susceptible to
breaking. The granules that youll see on the
surface of asphalt shingles are there to help
protect the material underneath from becoming
affected by UV exposure, but with the addition of
wind, torrential rain and wear and tear caused by
hanging branches or debris, the shingles will
break and need to be replaced.

4
  • What can Florida homeowners do to help their roof
    last longer?
  • The only way to prevent an asphalt shingle roof
from degrading due to continual UV exposure, is
to choose an alternative material when having
your roof replaced, or when first building your
home. Tiles are a good choice, but they can be
costly. Metal is still a more expensive option
than asphalt shingles, but is cheaper than tiles
and can last a lot longer.
  • While metal will still be affected by the
expansion and contraction from heat and cold
exposure (known as thermal shock), the UV rays
dont affect the chemical makeup of metal,
meaning that it wont become brittle and crack
like asphalt shingles do when continually exposed
    to the suns rays.

5
  • Its important to remember that while choosing a
material other than asphalt shingles for your
Florida roof may cost more initially, it could
save you a lot of money in the long run, because
the material will degrade at a far slower rate,
if at all. To discuss your roofing options in
more detail, schedule a consultation with an
Atlas Roofing specialist. They will have a wealth
of knowledge about local weather conditions and
climate, and can help you select the best type of
    roof for your Florida home.
