Popular Shade Options to Keep You Cool
Protected This Summer

  • There are few things nicer than resting your feet
up in the shade and sipping an icy glass of iced
tea on a hot summer day. One of the greatest ways
to make your outdoor space welcome for friends
and family, as well as a calming retreat for
yourself after a long day, is to install
a retractable fabric roof where people can relax.

Shade Trees
  • Planting shade trees on your property is the most
natural of our 6 shade alternatives, and resting
under a shade tree is one of the loveliest ways
to take a cool respite from the scorching heat.
Of course, this is a long-term investment you
wont be relaxing this summer (or next summer) in
the shade of a tree you planted this year.
  • But it doesnt take as long as you might think
fast-growing shade trees can have you basking in
their cool shade in as little as 5 to 6 years
after theyre planted, which is rather quick in
    tree terms.

Enclosed Porches
  • Some homeowners choose to build an enclosed porch
so that they can enjoy the fresh air without the
sun and pests that come with it. Building an
enclosed porch is comparable to building on an
extra room in terms of cost, so be prepared to
spend a significant amount of money. It would be
worth it, though, if there are no more insects!

Pergolas, Gazebos or Arbors
  • Pergolas and gazebos are lovely additions to your
home that will improve the ambiance of your
outdoor living area. Climbing plants can be
incorporated into your outdoor décor using
arbors, pergolas, and gazebos, among other
    structures.
  • A little steel pergola with a polyester cover can
set you back a few hundred dollars, whereas a
large composite aluminum pergola would set you
back over 2,000, and a custom-made wood pergola
will set you back much more. On the low end,
gazebos cost approximately the same, but a larger
vinyl gazebo with a shingle roof will set you
    back 5,000 or more.
  • Because they usually have solid roofs, high-end
gazebos cost more than pergolas if youre
seeking for shade, keep this in mind. Because
some gazebos and most pergolas have cutouts in
their roofs, they only provide partial shade
    until you cover them.

Deck Umbrellas
  • For good reason, deck umbrellas or patio
umbrellas are a perennial favorite among
homeowners. In comparison to awnings or pergolas,
they are quite inexpensive, with smaller ones
    starting at around 60.
  • You can even have a table with a larger patio
umbrella built in, which will provide shade to
everybody who sits at the table. Patio umbrellas
have the advantage of being inexpensive and
movable nevertheless, they only give shade for a
    small area.
  • Whether or not the restricted amount of shade
will be a disadvantage depends on how many
    persons you intend to shade.

Shade Canopies
  • Shade canopies are a less expensive way to add
shade to your outdoor living area. These are just
rectangular pieces of light material that you may
extend over top of sitting areas to block the
suns rays. Theyre also known as shade tarps or
    shade sails.
  • A shade canopy can be purchased for as little as
35 and as much as 100. Shade canopies are
available in a variety of sizes and colors, so
they may be a fun addition to your outdoor decor.
  • They have hooks that link to trees or other
structures, making them reasonably easy to move
    about when the mood strikes.

Awnings
  • Awnings are a popular way to add shade to your
deck, patio, or porch. Awnings can be rigid or
retractable, with rigid ones constructed of
extruded metal, wood, or polycarbonate and
retractable awnings made of flexible materials
    like vinyl or canvas.
