Title: 4 Most Effective Treatments for a Broken Wrist Fracture
14 Most Common Treatment Options for a Broken
Wrist Fracture
2- The most common cause of a broken wrist is
falling on an outstretched hand. This can be
caused by an accident, but it can also be the
result of a sports injury. - The most common signs and symptoms of broken
wrist are - Pain and swelling around the wrist
- Trouble in moving fingers
- Loss of grip strength in the wrist and hand
- Difficulty handling objects and tasks
- A wrist fracture is diagnosed by a doctor based
on a medical history, physical examination and
X-rays. The doctor will ask about the injury and
any previous wrist injuries. The doctor may also
ask about the age of the patient, their
occupation and any previous surgeries or injuries
to other parts of the body. The doctor will also
examine the wrist for deformity, swelling or
tenderness in key areas. X-rays are typically
taken to rule out a fracture that is not visible
on initial examination, such as an undisplaced
fracture of the distal radius (the bone between
the elbow and thumb). CT scans can be useful if
there is doubt about whether a joint surface has
been fractured, or if surgery is being considered.
3- If you have broken your wrist, the doctor will
first determine the severity of the break. He or
she will then recommend the most appropriate
treatment option for wrist fracture. The
treatment options are - Cast - Casts are used to treat a broken wrist
when the fracture is mild, and it involves only a
small part of your bone. The cast is a hard shell
that covers your entire hand and wrist area. It
helps to keep everything in place while your
bones heal. A cast must be worn for at least 6
weeks, but it can be worn for up to 8 weeks if
necessary.
4- Surgery (Open Reduction Internal Fixation) -
Surgery is used to treat a broken wrist when
there's a lot of damage or if you have other
injuries too like ligament tears or tendon
injuries attached to your fractured wrist
bone(s). - Brace - A brace is a device that is used to
immobilize and support your wrist fracture while
it heals. The brace will be fitted to your body
and will be worn for up to 8 weeks after the
injury occurs. - Splint - A splint is a device that is used to
immobilize a broken wrist while it heals by
either being worn over top of a cast or by itself
if there's no cast in place yet. A splint is also
known as an orthopedic splint or an orthopedic
cast which can be custom-made by an orthotist
specifically for each patient depending on their
injury needs, size and shape of their body parts
and other factors.
