Sand Control Solutions Market
An Introduction to the Sand Control Solutions
6
Introduction
  • Sand control is a technique for preventing
reservoir sand from migrating into or near the
wellbore. This method is required for several oil
and gas producing wells around the world. Sand
production is caused by two reasons. The first is
rock mechanical failure near the wellbore, and
the second is dragging force from producing or
injection fluid. Sand production, if not
controlled, can cause a number of problems,
including decreased production, erosion of the
completion string and down hole tool, and damage
to surface facilities such as separators and
    piping.

Sand Control Methods
  • There are two methods to control sand production.
  • Active Sand Control
  • Passive Sand Control

7
  • Active Sand Control
  • In this method, different kinds of filters are
used to control sand production. Some of the
    techniques to control it are
  • Stand-alone screen
  • Expandable sand screen
  • Frack Pack and Gravel Pack
  • Chemical Consolidation
  • Passive Sand Control
  • This method uses a non-intrusive method to
control sand production. The following techniques
    are passive sand control methods.
  • Oriented perforation
  • Selective perforation
  • Sand management

8
Sand Control Techniques
  • There are different techniques used to control
    sand production.
  • Maintenance and workover
  • Rate exclusion
  • Selective completion practises
  • Plastic consolidation
  • High energy resin placement
  • Resin coated gravel
  • Stand-alone slotted liners or screens
  • Gravel packing
  • Expandable sand screen
  • Chemical Consolidation

9
  • Maintenance and Workover - Routine bailing,
washing, and cleaning of surface facilities is
performed in this approach to maintain well
production. This technique is effective where
there is minimal sand production, a low
production rate, and economically viable well
    service.
  • Rate Exclusion In this technique, the rate of
the wells flow is restricted, which reduces the
sand production. This is a trial-and-error method
in which the objective is to attempt to establish
the maximum sand free flow rate.
  • Selective Completion Practices - The goal of this
technique is to produce only those sections of
the reservoir that are capable of withstanding
    the anticipated drawdown.
  • Plastic Consolidation In this technique,
plastic particles are injected that are attached
to the formation sand grains. The resin
subsequently hardens and forms a consolidated
mass, binding the sand grains together at their
    contact points.

10
  • High Energy Resin Placement - The technique
injects the resin rapidly under highly
overbalanced conditions. The resin is surged into
the formation at rates that will place the resin
before the formation has a chance to fail.
Another benefit of the rapid resin placement is
that the technique appears to be less affected by
    permeability contrasts than the matrix
    treatments.
  • Resin Coated Gravel In this method, partially
catalyzed phenolic resin-coated gravel is used,
which is 5 of the total weight of the sand. When
exposed to heat, the resin cures, resulting in a
    consolidated sand mass.
  • Stand-alone Slotted liners or Screens In this
technique, fine sand and silt are passed through
the screen. Once sand packs are developed around
the screen, they will be like a filtration medium
which prevents sand from flowing into a wellbore.
  • Gravel Packing - Gravel packing consists of
placing a screen or slotted liner in a well
opposite the completion interval and placing
    gravel concentrically around it.

11
  • Expandable sand screen - Expandable screen is the
latest screen technology. It consists of a
perforated pipe, filter media, and an outer
    shroud.
  • Chemical Consolidation - Chemical consolidation
is an alternative way to the mechanical method to
    control sand production in unconsolidated
formations by injecting chemicals into the
formation in order to strengthen or consolidate
    sand.

Market Prospect
  • Recent news from sand control solutions
    companies.
  • Schlumberger and Subsea 7 announced today that
they have signed an agreement to renew the Subsea
Integration Alliance for a further seven years.
Subsea 7 and Schlumbergers OneSubsea subsea
    technologies, production and processing systems
business, to jointly design, develop, and deliver
    integrated subsea development solutions through
the combination of subsurface expertise, subsea
    production systems (SPS), subsea processing
systems, subsea umbilicals, risers, and flowline
    systems (SURF), and life-of-field services.

12
  • Halliburton Company and Aker BP will co-develop
    next generation field development planning
    software.
  • Baker Hughes and Petrosafe, a subsidiary of the
    Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC),
announced a contract that will mark the first
deployment of Baker Hughes flare.IQ technology
in refinery operations in Egypt to help reduce
emissions from oil and gas flaring operations.
  • Superior Energy Services has announced their
first quarter results for 2022. The companys
    Adjusted EBITDA (a non-GAAP measure) was 53.0
million for the quarter, an increase of 32
compared to 40.1 million in the fourth quarter
    of 2021.
  • According to Delvens' market report, the Global
Sand Control Solutions market is expected to
reach USD 2.3 billion in 2021, growing at a CAGR
    of 9.1 between 2021 and 2028.

13
Conclusion
Sand control solutions have become popular in
recent times. Factors such as increased effort in
the direction of increasing the reserve to
production ratio from old wells and the increase
in depth of wells, ongoing shale development
activities and efforts to increase the reserve to
production ratio from wells, and with the decline
in oil reserves, major oil and gas companies have
shifted their attention toward technological
advancements to invent tools and techniques
required to access residual reserves on
conventional wells. COVID-19 crisis has impacted
the oil gas exploration production
activities, but Delvens market research report
has clearly indicated the potential of the sand
control solutions market in the future.
