and vegetables may help to guard against eye
diseases, as well as helping with overall
health. Eating a low-fat, high-fruit,
high-vegetable, whole-grain diet may not only
benefit your heart, it may benefit your eyes.
Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables--espe
cially leafy, dark greens like spinach, cabbage,

eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like
salmon, tuna, and halibut, has benefits for eye
health. If you include specific nutrients, like
vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, in your
diet, you may be able to improve overall eye
health and vision. Foods that provide nutrients
and antioxidants, such as Lutein and Zeaxanthin,
vitamins A, C, E, beta-carotene, zinc, and
omega-3 fatty acids, need to be included in the
diet in order to support a healthy
vision. Eating a diet high in fruits and
vegetables - especially leafy, dark greens such
as spinach, cabbage, or collard greens - is
important to keeping eyes healthy, too.i Studies
also suggest that eating fish that is high in
omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and

development of age-related degenerative diseases.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin help you see better and
keep the outer eye surfaces healthy. Nuts also
provide high levels of vitamin E, which may
protect your eyes from age-related damage.
Carrots provide beta-carotene, which your body
uses to create vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential
for the health of your eyes. Citrus fruits are
high in vitamin C. Just like vitamin E,

vitamin C is an antioxidant recommended by the

eyes. Orange and red fruits and vegetables, such
as red bell peppers, oranges, strawberries,
broccoli, and kiwis, contain vitamin C, another
antioxidant, that may help prevent
cataracts. Studies have shown that nutrients
such as vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, lutein,
zeaxanthin, essential fatty acids, and zinc can
help lower the risk of developing eye diseases
like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related
macular degeneration. The Age-Related Eye Disease
Study (AREDS), published in 2001, found that
specific nutrients--zinc, copper, vitamin C,
vitamin E, and beta carotene--can lower your
risk of age-related eye health declines by 25. A
diet high in omega-3 fatty acids from cold-water
fish can help lower the risk of developing eye
diseases later in life, studies have suggested.
Fill your plate with foods high in omega-3 fatty
acids and vitamins C and E. These nutrients may
help reduce the chances that you will develop
macular degeneration or cataracts. Other foods
that include omega-3 fatty acids are walnuts
(which also provide the eye-healthy vitamin E),
flaxseeds, and chia seeds. By adding vitamins,
potent antioxidants, minerals and carotenoids,
all of which are readily available in a variety
of vegetables, fruits, and other wholesome foods
to your diet, you can help your eyes stay
