Decide what you value most in life These are the
ideas, emotions, and sentiments that make up your
core. They energise you, get you out of bed in
the morning, and fill you with unmitigated
excitement. This could be a particular activity
or it could be people. Knowing what these things
are in advance sets the tone for how and with
whom you spend your time. You can let go of the
rest when you are aware of what is most important
to you and what you value most.
3
Define the legacy you want to leave the world
What do you hope people will remember you for?
Whom and how do you wish to influence? One
exercise I give my clients is to see themselves
becoming the subject of a speech 30 years from
now. I ask them to express their opinions about
themselves and their work.
4
Be clear on who you want to serve and for whom
you want make a difference Consider what might
have helped you based on your own life and
professional experiences. Can you now influence
someone else in the same way? Look about you
what would you try to improve or change if time
and money were not an issue? Discovering the
difference you wish to make can begin with this.
5
Focus on yourself and take care of yourself We
frequently hear people talk about taking care of
oneself consider going beyond vacations and spa
days. Regularly take a break and concentrate on
"being" rather than "doing." Create daily
routines that allow you to have time to be still,
both physically and mentally, as a way of taking
care of yourself.
6
Be prepared to say no unapologetically Say "no"
if something doesn't feel right or if you simply
don't want to do it or participate. Make no
justifications or apologies. Simply state
emphatically, "No, that's not for me." Keep in
mind that if you agree to something that is not
in your best interests, you are rejecting your
own vision, objectives, and purpose. You affirm
yourself and your mission with each unreserved no.
7
Surround yourself with radiators not drains The
benefits of surrounding yourself with the right
people are numerous. Having the appropriate
relationships means building a network of allies
to support your various facets of life and work.
Find a coach, mentors, sponsors, and supporters
who share your vision and can help you achieve it.
8
Be prepared to say no unapologetically The
people you spend the most time with have an
energy that you mirror. Spend time with people
who will uplift you and for whom you can do the
same consciously. Find the people who will push
you to achieve your goals, stand by you when
times are tough, and rejoice with you. Avoid and
get rid of any personal or professional ties that
drain your energy.
