3Many patients are nervous when they first decide
to begin cognitive behavioral therapy because
they do not know what to expect. Usually, the
process starts with the client completing various
forms and questionnaires that help the therapist
assess mood and provide an objective baseline for
assessing progress down the road. During the
therapy itself, therapists perform mood checks
and set an agenda for the session based on events
from the prior week. Often, the therapist will
build bridges between current concerns and prior
conversations.

4The heart of a CBT session involves discussion of
the problems put on the agenda with a focus on
building assessment and problem-solving skills.
Therapists will challenge clients to assess the
accuracy of their thoughts and beliefs in the
specific situation and then introduce new skills.
At the end of the session, therapists generally
ask for feedback on what was and was not helpful
in an effort to shape future sessions.
