How To Design An Office Addition/Guest Room
Combination
2
  • Ever since the pandemic, people working from home
has become more and more common, and for many
nowadays, it has become a permanent change.
Whether their employers have requested that they
continue doing so, or whether they have chosen to
work from home as it presents the more convenient
option, either way, people are wanting to create
office spaces in their homes to help them fulfil
    their roles professionally.

3
  • If your home has the space for an office, whether
you add one on or convert another space into one,
thats great, but what if you end up converting a
space into an office that might otherwise still
have an alternative purpose, such as a guest
room? And if you add an office onto your home,
either to the side or above, what will you do
with the space if you take on a new job that no
longer means you can work from home?
  • One solution would be to create an office/guest
room home addition combination, and here are some
    ideas for doing exactly that

4
  • Make use of built-in furniture
  • Maximizing space is important, not just because
most families dont have the space for a huge
addition to their home, but also because dual
purpose rooms generally need more space in order
to fulfil both functions, and sometimes at the
same time. Fortunately, desks, shelving and
cabinets that are built-in dont just save space,
but they also save on the jungle of wires needed
for all of your electronic office equipment and
gadgets. Youll have plenty of space to store
private items when the space is being used by a
guest, and theyll also have some space to keep
their things in, depending on how long they plan
    to stay.

5
  • Try and repurpose a closet
  • By taking the doors off of a large closet in the
room, you can create a small but perfectly
functional nook for you to work in, alongside
your office equipment. This will help guests feel
less like they are intruding in your workspace,
as you will be in one designated area within the
room, while they are in the other.

6
  • Consider productivity
  • While you want your guests to be comfortable
while staying with you, the primary purpose of
the space will be to serve as your office, and as
such, you should prioritize your decorative and
functional needs over those of a guest. Choose
calming colors for the walls, artwork that will
motivate you without distracting you, and think
carefully about flooring your office chair
should be able to move around freely, and yet you
dont want to be disturbed by the clattering of
feet on hardwood or tiled floors.

7
  • Think about sound levels
  • Whether the space is being used as an office or a
guest room, privacy is likely quite high on the
agendas of both sets of people who may be using
it, so you might want to consider soundproofing
the walls. This will help you concentrate when
youre working and be able to make confidential
phone calls and the like in complete privacy,
while guests will be able to complain about their
hosts without the fear of anyone overhearing them!

8
  • Add a Murphy bed
  • Having a large, double bed in the room might make
the space feel less conducive to a working
environment, in which case you may want to add a
Murphy bed which can simply be folded away when
    not needed.
  • Adding rooms on to your home that have dual
functions (or converting existing spaces into
them), is an affordable way to create more space
without spending a fortune, and provided you seek
help from a general contractor with plenty of
    addition experience, it can significantly
increase the value of your home, too.
