It has a negative impact on the environment,
economy, or human health.
Intentionally or unintentionally introduced into
a new area.

Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and
Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

Also known as the "IPCC for biodiversity/
An independent intergovernmental body with over
140 member governments.
Established by governments in 2012
Provides policymakers with objective scientific
assessments
Not a United Nations organisation.
But, UNEP provides secretariat services to IPBES

Major Invasive Species- Water Hyacinth

Water hyacinth is one of the most invasive plants
in the world, and it has been introduced to over
100 countries. Water hyacinth can grow rapidly,
forming dense mats that can cover waterways and
disrupt ecosystems. It can also block sunlight
and prevent native plants from growing.

Lantana, a flowering shrub is the second most
common invasive species. Lantana can grow quickly
and form dense thickets that can outcompete
native plants. It can also produce toxic
chemicals that can harm animals and humans.
