The renowned Native American artist Earl Biss was
born in 1947 in Renton, Washington.  An enrolled
member of the Crow Nation, Biss spent his early
childhood on the Crow Reservation in Montana with
his grandmother before moving to live with his
father on the Yakima Reservation in Washington.
He grew up in the soaring landscapes of the
American West where he developed an abiding
fascination and appreciation for tribal
histories, traditional stories, and mountainous
landscapes.

In the 1960s, Biss attended the Institute of
American Indian Arts in Santa Fe where he studied
under Fritz Scholder, Charles Loloma, and Allan
Houser.  Continuing his education, Biss studied
in Paris and San Francisco before returning to
Santa Fe.  Biss moved his studio many times over
the course of his career, living in Colorado, New
Mexico, Montana, and California.
The colorful artwork of Earl Biss is a testament
to his skill as a painter working in the
delicate realm of figurative abstraction with a
wet-on-wet technique, Bisss work pushes the
boundaries of representation and the capacity of
oil paints.  Many of his luminous, expressive
canvases were painted in extreme creative
sessions lasting for days at a time.
