Food Ingredients- Necessity Of Natural
Flavouring, Colouring, Sweetening
The term food ingredient includes any substance
that is added to a food to achieve the desired
effect. Food ingredients provide convenience and
allow food manufacturers to produce a wide
variety of foods that are safe, appetizing,
uniform, nutritious and tasty. Ingredients
perform a variety of functions in foods,
including providing nutrition, flavour, colour,
physical stability and much more. Natural Food
Colours Natural food colours refer to the dyes
or pigments extracted from natural sources such
as fruits, vegetables and plants. Usually, they
are extracted from natural things like seeds,
fruits, vegetables, leaves, algae, etc. Necessity
2
Food colour is an obvious hunger initiator. The
very sight of food in eye-catching colours gives
us the feeling of having eaten it. That craving
should be initiated the moment we see food.
That's the whole idea of food manufacturing
companies. The first element observed in the way
any food product looks is often its
colour. Humans begin to associate certain
colours with various types of foods and equate
these colours to certain tastes and flavours,
such as yellow pudding to have a banana or lemon
flavour and red jelly to have a cherry flavour.
For fresh foods, such as fruits and vegetables,
we rely on the colour to determine their level of
ripeness and/or freshness. Food companies are
aware that consumers determine the quality and
taste of a food product long before their taste
buds have had a chance to process it. Natural
colouring is preferred and should be practised
to compensate for the psychological need for food
colour. Colour Natural- Food Colours Brown-

Flavour The Flavours are intense preparations,
which are added to foods in order to impart taste
and/or smell. Food manufacturers have been using
flavouring substances that have been used in a
wide variety of food, from confectionery and soft
drinks to cereals, cakes and yoghurts. Natural
food flavours, which are derived from herbs,
spices and substances having an exclusively
sweet, sour or salty taste. Necessity Flavour is
an important characteristic of the foods we eat
every dayit's difficult to imagine eating a diet
made up of bland flavourless foods! Essentially,
the flavour is the combination of the taste,
aroma, and feel of the food.
3
While some foods, such as fresh fruits and
berries, taste delicious just as they are, most
dishes we eat are more complex and almost always
contain some type of added ingredients to enhance
flavour. Actually, every recipe includes some
sort of extra flavour enhancing ingredients, such
as salt, pepper, herbs, and spices. Enhancing
the flavour of foods can make eating a joyful
thing for anyone of us. Adding flavours to foods
also helps to stimulate appetite, which is
essential for people. These three components of
food flavours are Natural Herbs - Mint, Basil
