Goal of the Project
  • Our five year plan is to utilize the resources
    to extend the reach of the NLM course. The
    investment made by the NLM in the Biomedical
    Informatics course can be expanded to address the
    informatics needs of many institutions,
    especially through the sharing of expertise and
    experience.

Our Five Year Plan
  • Building relationships between all students and
    instructors involved with the NLM Biomedical
    Informatics MBL courses.
  • Establishing a network
  • Establishing a mentoring program

Year 1
  • Host reunion/meeting
  • Instructors provide updates on the trends in
    Biomedical Informatics
  • Students present research/implementation projects
  • Form working groups
  • Plans to build up teleconference capability at
    each site
  • Establish an external advisory committee

Year 2 and Year 3
  • Working groups identify specific needs from site
    requests.
  • Support provided by sites that have already
    successfully solved
  • a similar problem.
  • Coordination Center established to coordinate
    fund, support,
  • communication, consultation.
  • Executive committee established to determine the
    priority of
  • individual requests.
  • Working groups submit reports to AMIA on their
    experiences.

Year 4
  • Activities are expected to continue at a moderate
    to
  • reduced rate.
  • Funds saved will be used to commission an
    independent
  • study of the effectiveness of the program.
  • Report results will be reviewed by the external
    advisory
  • committee and changes proposed.
  • Grant resubmission for continued support of the
    program
  • will be prepared.

  • Finalizing the external review
