Types of Renal Failure

• Prerenal
• Dehydration
• Renal
• Somethings wrong with the kidney
• Post Renal
• BPH, other obstructions

End Stage Renal Disease

• 75 of nephrons dont work
• DM, HTN, glomerulonephritis commonly cause
• Decreases protein, insulin, potassium
• Causes anemia, itching, urine odor on breath
• Need low K Na, high protein diet
• Fluid restriction to avoid weight gain

Hemodialysis

• Blood is removed, filtered, and returned via the
  artificial kidney
• Takes 3-5 hours, 3 days per week
• AV fistula or shunt commonly inserted

Nursing Care

• Vital signs before/after dialysis trip
• Daily weights
• No magnesium (Maalox, MOM)
• No BP in arm with AV shunt
• Surveyors will interview ESRD residents during
  annual survey
