The JAA study Human factors implications for
flight safety of recent developments in the
airline industry does not mention
cockpit/systems design as a factor

Overview
  • Interim Policy 25 / 14
  • Why is task distribution important
  • What defines task distribution
  • Normal operation
  • Non-Normal operation
  • CRM versus tasks
  • Options
  • Getting the whole picture
  • Early test vehicle

5
Inetrim Policy 25/14
  • Task Distribution considerations
  • 1. The introduction of novel design features may
potentially affect workload or awareness between
crew or across time Some tasks may become more
time consuming or exclusive. Such effects should
    be explored

6
Interim Policy (contd.)
  • 2. The quantity, similarity and function of
tasks that are conducted through a single device
or acces point should be investigated for peaks
or bottlenecks at busy or critical periods.
  • 3. The risks from task interruption (and
potentially remaining incomplete) may also be
    related to design characteristics (menus).

7
What defines Task Distribution
  • Company procedures
  • Culture
  • Level of experience
  • Seniority
  • Religion
  • Cockpit layout
  • Display functionalities and reversion
  • reachability
  • Automation functionalities

8
Why is task distribution important
  • Reducing workload
  • Enhancing SOPs
  • Enhancing CRM (Actor/Monitor Actor/Manager)
  • Reducing probability of Pilot Error

9
Normal Operations
  • Actor / Monitor
  • Alternating roles
  • Equally flyable from both sides
  • Monitoring possible from both sides
  • Automation programming (FMS, Autopilot)
  • Automation logic (side in control)

10
Non-Normal operations
  • Actor / Manager
  • Loss of input devices
  • Loss of instruments
  • Loss of automation
  • Loss of controls
  • Automation logic (side in control)
  • Hardware to facilitate CRM principles

11
CRM versus tasks
  • CRM globaly accepted to improve performance
  • Forced task distribution can frustrate critical
    CRM
  • Forced task distribution result of cockpit design

12
Options
  • All options must be included in the evaluations

13
Getting the whole picture
  • Part Task testing is necessary but scenarios are
normally tested on a finished product
  • Full scenario testing only can reveal weaknesses
    in task distribution
  • This testing should be done in an early stage of
    the design

14
Early test vehicle
  • In order to get the whole picture in an early
stage a test vehicle is necessary
  • Test vehicle in order to design and not only to
    prove for certification
  • Test vehicle must be of such a quality that these
    goals can be achieved
