WP7 Main Goals
1) Prototype ILC intra-train beam feedback
system contribute engineered design to EDR
2) Study of EM backgrounds and optimisation of
IP FB system design against them 3) Design
simulation of integrated global alignment, FB
luminosity tuning strategy for EDR

ILC status
  • RDR completed
  • Next phase EDR being planned by GDE now
  • - Likely to be a BDS work package dominated by
    SLAC UK
  • Aim for EDR completion in 2010 hope for green
light from (US) Govt. so project can start
  • Details will be announced at LCWS Hamburg June 07
  • The GDE RD board was asked by PPARC to comment
    on LCABD proposal
  • GDE aims to exert tighter control on national
    RD spending
  • We will not be allowed to work on things that are
not directly ILC relevant, and agreed by GDE!

ATF/ATF2 schedule goals
  • Until mid 2008 (?) ATF continues as now
  • Late 2008? Reconfigure ATF and connect to ATF2
  • Early 2009? ATF2 commissioning
  • ATF2 goals
  • Achieve 35nm spot at ATF2 FF (2009??)
  • Stabilise spot to nm level (2010??)
  • Comments
  • This schedule already slipped by 1 year Yen
    tight in Japan
  • Took FFTB several years to achieve 70nm spots

10
ATF/ATF2 bunch structure
  • 2 or 3 bunches with 300 or 150ns spacing until
    late 2008
  • Fast kicker development work will proceed in
    parallel with ATF/ATF2 completely uncorrelated
    with ATF2 goals
  • IMHO the fast extraction kicker could take longer
    to develop
  • By 2009?? or 2010?? might get 20-60 bunches w.
    300ns spacing

11
FONT at ATF/ATF2
  • Goal 1 Micron-level beam stability needed at
    ATF2 FF entrance
  • Goal 2 Sub-micron stability needed
  • -gt wont get either w/o (intra-train) beam FB
    FF
  • (depends on bunch-bunch jitter this is unlikely
to be better with the fast kicker extraction from
    DR!)
  • Also for goal 2 they imagine IP FB using Honda
    IPBPM w. nm resolution
  • (nice, but not directly relevant for ILC FB!)

12
Default ATF/ATF2 plan
  • 2007/8 get FONT4 working properly (gain,
    delay-loop )
  • - operational improvements
  • design upstream FONT system for ATF2
  • what resolution to aim for?
  • 1 micron striplines vs. sub-micron cavities?
  • beamline layout
  • angle also? x also?
  • feed-forward?
  • 2009 Commission ATF2 FONT system for goal 1/2
  • 2010 20-60 bunches at 300ns? IP FB w nm BPM?
  • add luminosity signal input for fast scanning?

FONT bench test system
  • Manufacture synchronised ILC bunch-train, clocks,
    and trigger
  • Develop algorithms and program FPGA
  • Close loop

End Station A
  • Only guaranteed next run is July 2007
  • Fighting for runs in 2008 uphill battle
  • - probably get some beamtime
  • - long-term ESA looks dodgy
  • Longer term default to use SABER and/or LCLS
    beam -gt ESA
  • Need to decide
  • what to do in July 2007 run?
  • any further requirements for beam for EM
    studies?

19
Beam simulations
  • Apart from Tonys EM simulations these have been
on the back-burner since Glen left
  • Need to get plugged in to ILC LET studies for EDR
  • - continue/improve intra-train FB simulations
  • - integrate intra-train and 5Hz feedbacks
  • - integrate BDS feedbacks
  • - understand relationship with upstream FBs and
    FFs
  • - global FB, tuning strategy, alignment
