Defining Motivation
  • Motivation is the process of mobilizing and
    sustaining individual behaviors in support of
    organizational goals.

Theoretical Principles
  • I do it because it meets my needs
  • Mazlow hierarchy of needs - physiological,
    safety, social and love, esteem,
    self-actualization
  • I do it because I have a particular need
  • McClelland achievement, power, affiliation are
    the primary motivating needs

  • Herzberg there are two sets of job factors one
    set motivates, the other is either neutral or
    causes dissatisfaction
  • I do it because its the goal
  • Locke and Latham behavior is driven by goals and
    values. Goals should be specific, hard but
    realistic, set and accepted by the individual,
    linked to performance and rewards,
    learning-oriented.

  • Skinner behavior is determined by its
    consequences positive reinforcement, avoidance,
    extinction, punishment

  • Expectancy theory deliberate choice to engage in

  • Social learning theory people learn motivated
    behaviors by observing and imitating others
    people seek approval

  • Self-determination or intrinsic motivation
    theory people are motivated to do interesting

  • Motivation is an individual phenomenon
  • You need to be flexible and situational in
    motivating others
  • Equal does NOT mean Fair
  • Dont treat people the way YOU want to be treated
    treat them the way THEY want to be treated.
  • Work to create a motivating environment

    possibilities not problems

    for feedback use it!
