OVERVIEW OF LANDFILL PROJECT OPPORTUNITY NAME
OF LANDFILL Landfill, which began filling in
YEAR, is owned by NAME OF MUNICIPALITY/OWNER
and has been leased to NAME OF LEASER. NAME OF
LANDFILL is a CHOOSE ONE SANITARY, CONTROLLED,
OPEN DUMP type of landfill with a designed area
of waste placement totaling _____ hectares/acres.
Currently, there are ____ cubic meters/tonnes of
waste in place with an average waste depth of
____ meters/feet. The designed landfill capacity
is _____ cubic meters/tonnes and is expected to
close in YEAR with an estimated ___ of

- The INSERT NAME OF MUNICIPALITY/OWNER seeks
specific cooperation to advance the - development of this project.
- There is/is not local/municipal interest in
pursuing a landfill gas project. - Types of cooperation sought investor build, own,
operate partnership technical assistance. - The project is/is not willing to consider carbon
financing. - The project owner already has/does not have an
agreement (i.e., contract) to sell its carbon
credits.
DISCLAIMER The information and predictions
contained within this poster are based on the
data provided by the site owners and operators
and site visits conducted by U.S. EPA. The
Methane to Markets Partnership cannot take
responsibility for the accuracy of these data. It
should be noted that conditions on landfills will
vary with changes in waste input, management
practices, engineering practices, and
environmental conditions (particularly rainfall
and temperature). The Methane to Markets
Partnership does not guarantee the quantity or
quality of available landfill biogas from the
landfill site, which may vary from the values
predicted in this report.
2BIOGAS AND ENERGY POTENTIAL
Under contract to the U.S. EPA, SCS Engineers
estimated the amount of biogas generated by the
NAME OF LANDFILL Landfill using the EPA and SCS
models. Model input data for the preliminary
assessment of a landfill methane capture and use
project were provided by NAME OF OWNER/LEASER
and collected during EPA site visits in
MONTH/YEAR.
- Other Landfill Physical/Operational Data
- Quantity of waste generated annually _____ m3 or
tonnes - Quantity of waste collected per day _____ m3 or
tonnes - Quantity of waste accepted annually _____ m3 or
tonnnes - Quantity of waste generated per capita _____ kg
- Daily cover is applied IF APPLICABLE
- Landfill site is capped with _______ (e.g., soil,
clay plastic) IF APPLICABLE - Landfill is lined with _______ (e.g., soil, clay
plastic) IF APPLICABLE - Waste compaction is performed IF APPLICABLE
- Landfill gas collection and control system
_____________ (e.g., passive venting wells
installed) - Number of vertical or horizontal wells _____ IF
COLLECTION - Average depth of wells _____ meters IF
COLLECTION - Leachate management ____________ e.g.,
accumulating in standing pools or seepages,
drained and collected in _____ liters/year

- Biogas Modeling Inputs
- CH4 generation potential (Lo) ____ m3/Mg
- CH4 generation rate constant (k)
- _____ for fast-decay organic waste (e.g., food)
- _____ for medium-decay organic waste (e.g.,
paper) - _____ for slow-decay organic waste (e.g.,
rubber) - Percent methane _____
- Gas availability factor _____
Values for these modeling variables have been
developed based on the waste composition data,
average annual precipitation at NAME OF
LANDFILL, and the results of a pump test
conducted in MONTH YEAR. It is not feasible to
collect all the gas generated at the site for
flaring or energy recovery, given site conditions
and collection system limitations. Therefore, the
amount of recoverable biogas was estimated by
applying a gas availability factor to the results
of the biogas generation model.

PROJECT OPTIONS
INSERT DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT OPTIONS (e.g.,
electricity generation, direct use, flaring only)
3ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Assuming that a gas collection and flaring system
is installed in YEAR, this landfill capture
project has the opportunity to collect and
destroy an average of XX million cubic meters
of methane annually over the next XX years.
This is equivalent to emission reductions of more
than XX tonnes of CO2 annually.
