Located in the Northern Panhandle of West
Virginia, Marshall County is bordered on the East
by Pennsylvania and on the West by the Ohio River
and the State of Ohio.

"Largest Mound in the United
States" Grave Creek Mound, 900 feet around and
70 feet high, the largest conical mound left by
prehistoric races in America.The inscribed stone
found in it has never been deciphered.

Grave Creek Mound is of the late Adena Period and
was built in successive stages over a period of
100 years or more. We do not know why the Adena
chose to build the particular mound on such a
huge scale compared with other burial mounds in
the area that generally range in size from 20 to

West Virginia Penitentiary
The first phase of the West Virginia
Penitentiary was completed in 1876 at a total
cost of 363,06

West Virginia Penitentiary
The building extended 682 feet across the front
and was engulfed by 24-foot high walls that are
6-feet in width at the base and tapered to 18
inches at the top. The facility opened for full
operation in 1876 with 251 male inmates.
