2
International Students in Australia and at Monash
University
  • Relative to its size Australia has attracted a
disproportionately large share of the world
    market for English-speaking international
students. Nearly 1 in 5 tertiary students in
    Australia are international.
  • Monash is Australias largest University with
around 55,000 students. Its largest Faculty is
Business and Economics with 16,000 students.
More than 11,000 are studying undergraduate
business degrees. Of these 45 are international
    full-fee paying students.
  • International students come overwhelmingly from
Asia. Students from mainland China have
increased fourfold since 2001 and now account for
more than half our international intake.

than do local students so we assume that they
will require more support than local students
  • How to deliver student support?
  • University wide provision vs Faculty level
    delivery
  • The problem of multiple campuses

5

  • Should Curriculi be re-shaped to attract Chinese
    students?
  • The Monash Experience
  • Local focus vs international focus
  • The Bachelor of Business and Commerce, an
international degree designed to be delivered
across multiple campuses in different countries

6
The Volatility of the Higher Education Market for
International Students
  • Revenues from international students the Monash
    Experience
  • Cross-faculty subsidies and intra-faculty
    subsidies
  • Exposure to risk in rapidly changing external
    environments
  • Measures of Success
  • Comparisons of the performance of local and
    international students
  • In the Faculty of Business and Economics average
pass rates of the two groups, that is local and
international students have differed by less than
