History

• In February 1963 the Cairo Demographic Center was
  established by an agreement between the United
  Nations and the Government of Egypt.
• In January 1992, the CDC was declared an
  independent institution, marking the end of three
  decades of UN support.
• The CDC is affiliated to the Ministry of
  Planning.

CDC Objectives

• Provide training in demography and population
  and development to individuals in the field
• Undertake research studies and surveys in
  population and related fields 
• Provide technical assistance and consultancy
  services to governments and organizations

• Organize national and regional seminars on
  population and development issues and disseminate
  research findings to a wide range of audience
•  
• Plan and conduct educational programs in the
  field of population and development
•  
• Assist governments and organizations in assessing
  and evaluating population programs and projects.
•

Organization

• The CDC comprises full-time and part-time faculty
  with varied disciplinary backgrounds including
  demography, statistics, sociology .  
• The CDC is headed by a director, assisted by
  program coordinators who are in charge of CDCs
  three main divisions Teaching, Research and
  Training.

The Academic Program

• Consists of three main programs
•  1-General Diploma in Demography
• 2-Special Diploma in Population and Development
• 3-Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Demography

Training Program

• CDC provides short term training especially
  tailored to meet the specific objectives of
  client organizations.
• With recent expansion in the field of population
  studies and related disciplines, new areas such
  as reproductive health, gender and adolescence
  have also been included.

Research Program

• In 1978, the CDC Governing Board approved a
  separate research budget, and a demographic
  research and survey unit was established in order
  to carry out surveys and research in critical
  areas.

• Over the years, CDC has become widely acclaimed
  for its high research standards and quality.
• Several national and international research
  organizations solicit the CDCs assistance in
  implementing research projects and operations
  research studies.

• Its yearly Monographs which include the
  proceedings of the Annual Seminar.

• Occasional Papers.
• Bi-annual Newsletter.
