New York State History Day
  • What is History Day? National History Day, a
    year-long educational program sponsored in New
    York State by the New York State Historical
    Association, encourages students in grades 6-12
    to explore local, state, national, and world
    history. After selecting a historical topic that
    relates to an annual theme, students conduct
    extensive research by using libraries, archives,
    museums, and oral history interviews. They
    analyze and interpret their findings, draw
    conclusions about their topics' significance in
    history, and create final projects that present
    their work.

  • Despite all this success we still arent that big
    of a deal back home!

  • Introducing participants to the National History
    Day program and offering training on program
    implementation and student-driven projects based
    on primary source research will provide a real
    world context for student learning and engagement
    with History Day resources.

    driven experience, in a process of inquiry that
    mirrors historic academic research utilizing
    primary sources

challenged rural districts will get the support
in making TWPS a reality

The Audiance
  • Interested teachers will be able to apply for
    mini-grants, assisting them with implementing the
    program in their individual schools, and for
    interested participants, extend the experience
    into the regional and state competitions
    associated with New York State and National
    History Day

How do we get there?
  • New York State History Day (NYSHD) staff, guest
    speakers, and distance learning opportunities
    will provide the training, and curriculum
    materials to be delivered to teachers, and
    librarians from across the BOCES' districts of
    New York State.

How do we get there?
  • This training will facilitate use of the Library
    of Congress' on-line collection, the American
    Memory Project, and provide web based support
    tools for National History Day implementation

History Day is Contagious
  • Once experienced by teachers and students- the
    process germinates
  • It represents a real world application of use of
    primary sources and provides meaning behind the
    study of history
  • This will provide long term growth and expansion
    of historic research and student interaction and
    understanding of primary source documents.
