What is the Water Cycle?
  • The water cycle is an endless journey that the
water takes from earth to sky and back again.
There are four stages in the water cycle
  • Evaporation
  • Condensation
  • Precipitation
  • Collection

Evaporation
  • Evaporation is when the sun heats up a water
body (a river, ocean or lake) and turns it into
steam or water vapor. The water vapor then leaves
the water body and goes into the air.

Condensation
  • Condensation is when the water vapor in the air
gets cold, turns back into liquid and forms
    clouds.

Precipitation
  • Precipitation occurs after too much water has
condensed in the air. The clouds get heavy and
the water falls back to earth in the form of
    rain, snow, sleet or hail.

Collection
  • When the water falls back to earth, it falls to
many different places. It might land in the
rivers, lakes and oceans or it might end up on
land. If it falls on land, it might soak in the
ground and become ground water or it might run
over the soil and fall back into the rivers,
lakes and oceans where the cycle will start over
    again.

What have you learned?
  • In what stage of the water cycle does the sun
heat up the water and turn it into water vapor
    (or steam)?
  • Evaporation
  • Precipitation
  • Condensation
  • Collection
