Funding Avenues

• Investigator-Initiated Research.
• Unsolicited
• The investigator initiates the research and
  submits a grant application within an area that
  is relevant to the NIH.

2. Program Announcements (PAs). Solicited The
NIH solicits grant applications or cooperative
agreements in a given high priority research
area. Generally, the applicant has responsibility
for the planning, direction, and execution of the
project.
3. Request for Applications (RFAs). Solicited
The NIH solicits applications for a one-time
competition on a specific topic. The RFA
typically describes an NIH ICs initiative in a
well-defined scientific area to stimulate high
priority research.
4. Request for Proposals (RFPs). Solicited The
NIH solicits offerors to submit research
proposals for a one-time competition on a
specific IC topic.

Funding Costs and IP

• Total Amount of Funding
• The NIH funds 100 of project costs. All costs
  are in US. What you ask for might not be what
  you get.
• Overheads are at 8 of ALL costs including PIS,
  managers, administrative costs relevant to the
  project, capital outlay of less than 5K. But
  not for capital equipment gt 5K.

• IP and Inventions
• All IP belongs to the grantee institution
• All Inventions must be reported to the NIH
• The US federal government reserves the right to
  use any inventions for non-commercial research
  much like any US patent!
