  Delhi
• Included representatives from MoEF, CPCB, State
  PCBs, academic institutions
• Review of Indian and U.S. air quality techniques
• Identified possible areas of collaboration
• Focus on Building Blocks for Air Quality
  Management. Interest in developing a
  science-based approach to air quality management

BRIEF BACKGROUND

• USEPA entered into 5 years bilateral MOU with
  MOEF in FY 2002. USAEP is strategic partner to
  USEPA in implementing this project in India.
• Pune selected as demo city for undertaking Urban
  Air Pollution Control Strategy Development
• Work started in Pune in December 2002
• Pune also initiated and became member of CAI-Asia
  in FY 2003

• Plans to renew the fleet of buses and introduce
  LPG buses in the PMT fleet
• Ban the registration of new six seater three
  wheelers

• Ban on plying of heavy vehicles in the central
  area of the city during daytime.( Ban is
  effective on 17 selected routes)
• Construction of various projects of fly-overs,
  ROBs. (Out of 12 earmarked projects, 1 flyover
  completed, 2 in progress.)
• Phasing out old municipal transport buses. ( 100
  new buses replaced, hiring of 85 buses in
  progress)
• Environmental Education program Awareness
  program for school children initiated through
  NGOs .
• IRDP (Integrated Road Development Program) and
  ambitious program of Rs. 10000 Million to
  develop international standard roads
• Free pollution check up camps and exhibitions
  held regularly.

• The Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities
  (CAI-Asia) promotes and demonstrates innovative
  ways to improve the air quality of Asian cities
  through partnerships and sharing experiences.
• The goals of the CAI-Asia program include
• Sharing knowledge and experiences on air quality
  management
• Improving policy and regulatory frameworks at
  the regional level
• Piloting projects to encourage innovation
• Assisting cities in implementing integrated air
  quality strategies
• CAI-Asia is a regional partnership of cities,
  national government agencies, private sector
  companies, NGOs and academia, international
  development agencies and foundations established
  to address air quality issues in Asia.

• The primary focus of the CAI program is on
• Forming a local network of stakeholders dedicated
  to work together to solve the urban air pollution
  problem in Pune.
• Formulating some realistic goals/objects for the
  local network and develop roadmap for achieving
  these goals and objectives. Carefully choose
  objectives which can be accomplished in a year.
• Agree on how as network the team will work and
  coordinate with the existing projects and
  programs.
• How CAI- Asia as an organization can help our
  local network will communicate with the
  international CAI-Asia network.

• the cell for a period of 5 years.
