Sport
Irkutsks Trud Stadium is one of the old stadiums
in Russia. It was built in the 1950s and is
currently used mostly for football matches and is
home to the football club Zvezda Irkutsk. It has
a capacity of 18 500.
6
Culture
Among the architectural pearls of Irkutsk, the
Drama Theatre holds a special place. Traditional
theatrical lanterns highlight its columns and
figured oval windows, which are in turn framed on
the left and right by the dates "1894" and
"1897. It took three years for Irkutsks
craftsmen to build one of the best Russian
provincial theaters. The first theatrical season
started on September 2, 1897 .
7
Museums
Irkutsks Museum of Regional Studies is one of
the oldest Russian museums. It was founded in
1782. In 1879 the fire destroyed the museum and
its 22830 exhibits. The money was raised by the
citizens and the new stone building was
constructed and solemnly opened in 1883. The
Museum houses 350,000 exhibits, some exploring
the life of Siberia from the Prehistoric Age to
present. There are primitive weapons and utensils
of the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages, a vast
collection of minerals, stuffed animals and
birds, old manuscripts, and logbooks of
geographical and geological expeditions.
8
Geographical area

Cartoon Character exploring the city of Galati
Hello! My names Gopo. I am Romanian but I still
have lots of places to explore in my own country.
15
First, I have to read some general information
about Galati and write down some notes before
going out in the city.
  • Galati is a beautiful city on the Danube.
  • It is located on the left bank of the Danube, at
the confluence of two other rivers the Siret and
    the Prut.
  • Galati is a city in eastern Romania, the capital
city of Galati County on the banks of the Danube,
very close to Braila forming with it the Cantemir
metropolitan area. In 2002, according to the
official Romanian census, the city had a
population of 298,861 people, making it Romania's
7th largest city. Galati has a fine 20th century
Romanian Orthodox cathedral - St. George (Sfântu
    Gheorghe) and another particularly striking
fortified church (that of St. Mary - Sf.
Precista) on the banks of the Danube, which was
built in 1647 by Vasile Lupu (legend has it that
a tunnel was dug from the church and under the
    river).

16
  • Other features of the city include a botanical
garden, several museums, a television tower
opened to the public and offering full view of
the city, the newly-restored Galati Opera House,
and a sculpture park lining a promenade of
several kilometers along the banks of the Danube.
  • Galati has a university, the "Dunarea de Jos"
University, founded in 1951 as a Naval and
    Mechanical Engineering Institute and given
university status in 1974, by merging the
Polytechnical Institute (the successor of the
initial Institute) with the College of Education
    (founded in 1959).

Here Im coming, GALATI! Im ready for the
sightseeing.

The story of two detectives and a lost sword.
  • By Kupina Ksenya,
  • Ivanov Andrew,
  • Volkov Artyom

29
  • This is a story about two detectives, who
wanted to find the lost sword of Ilya Muromets.
Once upon a time a cat brought them a strange
    note

30
Of course, My colleague! Its an ancient note.
There is information about the Ilya Muromets
lost sword. Some people think that this sword is
still in Murom.
Listen, Ive understood what it is.
I Think we should find it.
Mmm, I like this idea! Lets go to Murom, my
colleague!
What is it? Do you want to show me something???
Hey! My colleague! The cat has just brought a
note!
What is it?
Frankly speaking, I dont know
Could you explain?
Meow!
31
  • So, the detectives decided to go to Murom.
They got on a train and started their travel.
  • Actually, there is no need to show how they
    were travelling, because nothing special
    happened.

32
The railway station in Murom.
Actually, I dont know much about this town.
Thats why Ive bought a guide book of Murom.
Of course, Ill show it to you, my colleague.
Look at the first page.
Oh, Id like to see it very much! Show it to me,
please.
So, we are in Murom. Its so exciting!!! But what
shall we do now?
33
What a beautiful monument!
I agree with you, my colleague
Youre right. Anyway, I think we should start our
search from this place.
34
I agree with you. Anyway, we were looking for the
sword here but we have not found it, yet Maybe
we need to look for it somewhere else.
What a good place! And Ive never thought that
this monument is so beautiful.
Hey! Ive found something in the guide book!
Look!
35
Dont be silly. The armoured train is not so
ancient. Lets go to the centre of Murom. Maybe
we will find something interesting.
This armoured train is called Ilya Muromets.
Dont you think that the sword must be there?
36
What is that building?
Mmm Ive found something about it in the guide
book.
37
Thats interesting. However, I think that we
wont find the sword there.
Of course, youre right. I think we should look
for it in the ancient churches of Murom.
38
Listen, there are the remains of the saint Ilya
Muromets in the Savior-Transfiguration monastery.
Im sure the lost sword must be there!
Its logical, my colleague!
39
We got to the Savior-Transfiguration Monastery
Then we found the remains of the saint
Under the monument we found this amazing sword!
Yes, my colleague!
Weve found it!
40
Besides, now we know a story about Ilya Muromets!
Would you like to listen to this story?
41
Ilya Muromets According to legends, Ilya, the
son of a farmer, was born in the village of
Karacharovo, near Murom. He suffered serious
illness in his youth and was unable to walk until
the age of 33 (till then he was laid on a Russian
Oven), when he was miraculously healed by two
pilgrims. He was then given super-human strength
by a dying knight, Svyatogor, and set out to
liberate the city of Kiev from Idolishche to
serve Prince Vladimir the Fair Sun (Vladimir
Krasnoye Solnyshko). Along the way he
single-handedly defended the city of Chernigov
from invasion by the Tatars and was offered
knighthood by the local ruler, but Ilya declined
to stay. In the forests of Bryansk he then killed
the forest-dwelling monster Nightingale the
Robber (Solovei-Razboinik), who could murder
travellers with his powerful whistle.   In
Kiev, Ilya was made chief bogatyr by Prince
Vladimir and he defended Rus' from numerous
attacks by the steppe people, including Kalin,
the (mythical) tsar of Golden Horde.

  • Im an exchange student from Switzerland. Im
here for a half year and this is what I think and
    found out about Tampa Industry.
  • The cigar industry started in the 1880s. With the
reconstruction from the Civil War, the industries
in Tampa were growing and growing through the
1930s. The Tampa Cigar factories were exploding.
They produced everything from the box till to the
single cigars we know today. One of the famous
cigars was the cigars from Tampa Sweethearts
Cigar Company. This Cigar Company started in
1912. They were famous for one of their own
    Brand-cigars called the Tampa Sweethearts.

PEACOCK PAUL GOES TO GASPIRILLA Submitted by
Cultural Exchange Team
  • Our peacock, Paul, went to the Gasparilla Parade
and Pirate Invasion our city has each year in
February. This celebration has been happening
annually for over 100 years. The parade has many
floats and bands and is over three hours long.
People in the parade dress up like pirates and we
celebrate a pretend pirate, Jose Gaspar, who
invaded our city years ago. All the people in the
parade throw beads and it is very exciting to
catch the beads and take them home. Some people
say this celebration is like Madri Gras in New
Orleans. On different weekends around this
festival we have an art festival, a Gasparilla
run, a childrens parade, a night parade and a
    film festival.
  • Peacock Paul would like to know when the festival
    takes place each year.
  • Peacock Paul would like to know how people in the
    parade dress up?
  • Peacock Paul would like to know how long this
    celebration has been happening.
  • Answers
