The New PLM World Technical Organization Rafi
Krigman Technical Director PLM World,
Inc. Northrop Grumman Electronic
Systems rkrigman_at_northropgrumman.com  In December
2001, PLM World, Inc. was formed with one goal in
mind - serving the users of EDS PLM Solutions
products. PLM World, Inc. now represents the
users of EDS PLM Solutions products including
I-deas, Unigraphics and Teamcenter (iMAN,
Metaphase, SLATE, Project and e-vis.) The new
Technical Organization of PLM World, Inc. is a
consolidation of the technical Organizations of
the former Unigraphics Users Group (UGUG) and the
ICCON network. In defining the new structure of
the Technical Organization, we took into
consideration the needs of the PLM World members
and the strategic direction of EDS PLM Solutions.
The PLM World Technical Organization includes
the following organizational entities
Special Interest Group (SIG) o        Technical
Committee          Sub-committee
(Optional)          Focus Group
Conference only Technical Track
6
Special Interest Group (SIG) A Special Interest
Group (SIG) represents a large group of PLM World
members with a common interest in one of the
major product development areas of EDS PLM
Solutions. Each SIG has a Technical Leader
(Chairperson) and an EDS contact person from EDS
PLM Solution upper management. Each SIG has one
or more technical committees. The SIG's Technical
Leader is also the Leader of one of the SIG's
Technical Committees. In most cases, a SIG also
participates in the Customer Involvement Process
(CIP) that guarantees that EDS start the
implementation of the 1 Enhancement Request (ER)
voted on by PLM World members. Technical
Committee - A Technical Committee is a working
group within a SIG. It deals with a specific
technical area or application that is covered by
the SIG. It provides PLM World members with the
opportunity to work together with EDS PLM
Solutions developers on providing requirements
for future product development work. Committee
members are also given the opportunity to review
and provide feedback on projects that are under
development. A Technical Committee has 10-15
active volunteers who are knowledgeable about the
committee's subject matter and who are willing to
share their expertise and contribute to the
activities of the committees. Membership in the
committee is opened to all PLM World members. A
Technical Committee has a Technical Leader and a
technical representative from the EDS PLM
Solutions development organization. Most of the
committee's activities are done via conference
calls (bi-weekly or monthly) and email.
Sub-committee - A sub committee may be formed by
a technical committee to work on specific
development project within a technical committee
on an as-needed basis.
7
Focus Groups The purpose of a Focus Group is to
represent the interests of a smaller group of PLM
World members who are interested in a particular
technical area that is not considered one of the
major areas of interest covered by a Special
Interest Group. Such areas may include process
specific applications (e.g. Mold and Die design,
Interoperability and Data Translations, Routing,
etc.) A Focus Group may also serve as a staging
ground for forming new Special Interest Groups
once an emerging technology becomes widely used.
Knowledge Based Design (Knowledge Fusion) is an
example of an emerging technology that started as
a Focus Group and became a SIG. Each Focus Group
has a Technical leader and a representative from
EDS PLM Solution development organization.
Conference Only Technical Tracks The term
Technical Tracks refers to technical sessions at
the Annual Conference. The type and number of
Technical Tracks is based on the presentations
submitted and accepted by PLM World Technical
Selection Committee (Group Leaders). They usually
include EDS PLM Solutions product areas that are
not widely used by PLM World members. Technical
Tracks are not involved in providing technical
feedback to EDS PLM through the Customer
Involvement Process (CIP.) Be a Member of a
Technical Committee Members of PLM World are
encouraged to become members of any of the
existing Technical Committees. If you are
interested in joining a committee, please contact
the Technical leader of that committee. You will
have the opportunity to influence the future
direction of EDS PLM Solutions products to better
meet your company's needs. You will also have the
opportunity to learn from other key users and
from EDS PLM Solutions developers.
