2
Definition of CPD
  • CPD is a continuous process of personal growth,
to improve the capability and realise the full
potential of professional people at work
  • There are a variety of definitions of CPD across
the professions but it is usually taken to mean
learning activities, which update existing skills

3
CPD Requirements for Individuals
  • CPD requirements should be identified on the
basis of the need of the individual, within the
context of the needs of the organisation

4
CPD in the NHS
  • CPD needs in the NHS are identified through
appraisal with a personal development plan agreed
between the individual their manager (with the
commitment of the necessary time and resources)
  • (Dept of Health)

5
CPD Professional Organisations
  • A key development in ensuring that health
professionals maintain their competence is the
move among the regulatory bodies (e.g. UK CHIP)
to develop CPD strategies for the
    revalidation/re-certification of their members
  • (Dept of Health)

6
Why should I undertake CPD?
  • To develop your professional knowledge skills
    keep them current
  • It may be a condition placed on your continuing
    membership of a professional/regulatory body
  • To demonstrate your professional standing to
    patients employers
  • To assist you with your career development or a
    possible career change

7
Why the need to update knowledge skills
  • Introduction of new technology
  • New methods of working
  • Legislative changes
  • The emergence of new industries and new
    professions
  • all these situations define the need for
constant updating of knowledge and skills in
    order to maintain professional competence

8
Professional Competence(Kennedy Inquiry)
  • When we talk of professional competence, we
refer to patients' expectations that the
professional they come into contact with will be
up to the job. Professionals should be able to do
that which they profess they can do.
  • .when we talk of professionals, we repeat that
we mean all of the professionals who make the NHS
work doctors, nurses, the professions allied to
medicine, managers and other healthcare workers.

9
Professional CompetenceMore from the Kennedy
Report!
  • Professional competence requires a firm
educational grounding, followed by a period of
formal training to acquire the relevant knowledge
    and skills in the workplace
  • Thereafter, continued competence rests on a
    combination of education, continuous development,
    confidence and experience
  • It depends on the motivation of individual
professionals to learn and develop and the extent
to which their employer supports them and enables
    them to do so
  • It also depends on the professional standards
which they are required or expected to meet, and
on the wider systems for ensuring that those
    standards are adhered to
