Title: Radiant Energy

1
Radiant Energy
  • Electromagnetic Radiation
  • Waves
  • Amplitude
  • Wavelength
  • Frequency
  • Speed of light
  • visible spectrum

2
Quantum Theory
  • Quanta
  • Fixed amount of energy released by a particular
    substance.
  • EHv
  • H6.6262X10-34 Js
  • vfrequency
  • EEnergy

3
Photoelectric Effect
  • Light
  • Only certain wavelengths cause the ejection of
    electrons.
  • Photons
  • Absorbs an entire photon or none at all.
  • Line spectrum
  • Flame test

4
Bohr Model of the Atom
  • Energy levels
  • quantum numbers
  • ground state
  • excited state
  • emission of light
  • Heisenbergs Uncertainty Principle

5
Electron Orbitals
  • Electron clouds
  • Electron density
  • atomic orbital
  • principal energy levels
  • sublevels
  • s, p, d, f

6
Rules for Electron Configurations
  • Fill lowest energy levels and orbitals first
  • Each orbital can hold 2 electrons.
  • Electrons in an orbital must have opposite spins.
  • Aufbau Principle--Add electrons one at a time to
the lowest energy orbitals until all the
    electrons are accounted for.
  • Pauli Exclusion Principle--An orbital can contain
2 electrons that must have opposite spins.

7
Rules for Electron Configurations
  • Hunds Rule--Electrons occupy equal energy
orbitals so that a maximum number of unpaired
    electrons results.
