- Approximately 4 of youth reported trying
cigarettes for the first time. - Average initiation age is about 13 years old for
smoking a whole cigarette. - Alcohol Use Onset
- Approximately 12 of youth reported trying
alcohol for the first time. - Average initiation age is 12.7 years old for
trying alcohol and 13.6 years old for drinking
alcohol regularly. - Marijuana Use Onset

23Gateway Drugs
- This is important because the gateway drug
progression suggests that initiation and
experimental use of tobacco, alcohol and
marijuana lead not only to heavy and problematic
use of such drugs. It also increases the chance
that other drugs will be used (experimented with)
and later abused.
