The StateMembership Team
  • Our responsibility is to facilitate a team
    management approach for recruiting, retention,
    reactivation of inactive members, establishment
of new councils, and the promotion of members
    through degrees.

10
Role of the Grand Knight
  • As Grand Knight you are responsible for the
supervision, growth, and expansion of your
Council and for the Orders success
  • Represent Knights of Columbus in your Church and
    in your community

11
Grand KnightMembership Responsibilities
  • Work with your District Deputy to accomplish your
    membership goals
  • Ensure your Councils Membership Team is
    functioning properly
  • Establishing an active year round recruitment
    program

  • Gentlemen
  •
  • Reference is made to your letter of February 29
in which you point out that my dues are 30 days
or more in arrears. This is intentional on my
part. I apologize for failing to inform the
council that I did not intend to renew my
    membership.
  •
  • Through the auspices of Mr. Frank Hebert, I
joined the council last year for a number of
reasons, not the least of which was the hope of
    establishing friendships among like-minded
individuals. Having fairly recently lost my wife,
in addition to being new to the area, this was a
definite need on my part. Sadly, this turned out
to be a forlorn hope. Over the course of
attendance at five meetings, exactly one person,
other than Frank, exhibited any interest in my
appearance on the scene by coming up to me,
introducing themselves and engaging me in
conversation. When I attempted to insert myself
into a group, no effort was made to welcome me
and no attempt to make the newcomer feel a part
of the organization. I formed the definite
impression that the council was composed of a
number of established cliques not really
    interested in widening their membership.
  •
  • This letter is in no way an attempt to elicit
pity or create animosity. I call this matter to
your attention solely in the hope of generating a
positive effort in the future to make new members
    feel more at home.
  •
  • With all best wishes for future success of the
    council, I am,

Tips for Success
  • Both recruitment and retention begin the first
moment a prospective member is introduced to a
    Knight of Columbus.
  • You never get the chance to make a second
impression first impressions last a lifetime so
    make yours the very best.

17
  • When Retention Fails

18
When Retention Fails
  • The Maryland State Councils suspension policy
is the same as the Supreme Council's. There is no
    cutoff date for suspensions.

19
State Suspension Guidelines
  • Each Council MUST have a Recruitment Plan to
    replace lost members
  • No 1845s are to be submitted to Supreme unless a
copy is sent to the State Membership Director
    with the State Retention Worksheet
  • Do not submit 1845s for members less than 12
    months in arrears
  • Please process suspensions early in the Columbian
    Year

20
State Suspension Guidelines
  • 5) Councils should clean their books of deceased
members and process the paperwork for disabled
    members.
  • 6) Remember The State Membership Director MUST
receive your 1845 with a copy of the Retention
Worksheet OR the 1845 will be returned by Supreme.

21
Grand Knight Report
  • Each Grand Knight receives a monthly report which
    includes
  • monthly and year-to-date results of your
    Councils recruitment efforts
  • council totals
