Educational Philosophies
  • Ideal Aims of education
  • Plato (c.428-328 B.C.)
  • Rousseau (1712-1788)
  • Dewey (1859-1952)

2
Plato
  • Education aims at producing a just state
  • What is justice?
  • Socrates justice requires balance and harmony
    between different groups
  • Groups rulers, soldier, those who gave service
    to citizenry
  • Well-ordered and well-balanced society through
the education of its members for the roles needed
for such a society to function smoothly.

3
Rousseau
  • Education should be a place where one learns from
experience and not from books, from nature and
    not from adults.
  • The young child should develop freely and
    naturally. (natural consequences)
  • Unique worth of the individual and the need for
freedom in education to achieve individuality and
    personhood.

4
Dewey
  • Believed that schools could serve both aims
  • Democracy is a way of life not just a form of
    government
  • Embryonic social community
  • Students were encouraged to cooperate, work
together, and learn from each other while
    learning their lessons.
  • Learn by doing, learn through experience
