Title: We Come In Hundreds Of Colors' All Of Them Green'

1
We Come In Hundreds Of Colors. All Of Them Green.
  • APPRECIATED BY THE PLANET. MEASURED BY THE FOOT.TM

2
Environmental Overview
  • The New Patcraft Designweave is a member of
    the Shaw
  • Industries family
  • We benefit from this relationship and we pass
    these benefits
  • on to you
  • Shaws investment in environmentally sound
    manufacturing
  • processes and the development of sustainable
    product
  • ingredients is paying off for us, for you and
    for the environment

3
Environmental Overview
  • We have inherited the Shaw Green Edge which
    demonstrates
  • environmental leadership through demonstrable
    progress
  • The New Patcraft Designweave contributes to
    the hundreds
  • of environmental initiatives occurring
    throughout the company
  • that have positive environmental, economic and
    social
  • impacts
  • Collectively, these initiatives add up to the
    Shaw Green Edge

Shaw Industries Environmental Policy
  • Environmental sustainability is our destination
    and Cradle to
  • Cradle is our path
  • Our entire corporation and all stakeholders
    value and share
  • this vision
  • Through eco-effective technology, we will
    continuously
  • redesign our products, our processes, and our
    corporation
  • We take responsibility for all that we do and
    strive to return
  • our products to technical nutrient cycles,
    virtually eliminating
  • the concept of waste

6
Sustainable sustainable
  • Capable of being continued with minimal
    long-term effect of
  • the environment
  • With products from The New Patcraft
    Designweave, you
  • have the option to decide the impact your
    project makes on
  • the environment
  • Other manufacturers recycle we Lifecycle with
    sustainable
  • ingredient brands and eco-intelligent processes

7
Cradle To Cradle
Its about doing something thats incredibly
good creating high quality products that
sacrifice nothing and actually benefit the
environment
Its not about limiting the amount of bad that we
do in the world
8
Cradle To Cradle
The cradle-to-cradle strategy that Michael
Braungart and I developed goes far beyond
brute recycling. It embraces materials that were
designed to be used as technical or biological
nutrient- safe and healthy materials designed for
infinite lifecycles. Thats why products like
Eco Solution Q and EcoWorx are so important
materials brought to pure technical cycles,
uncontaminated, forever and ever.
-William McDonough

Ingredient Brands
  • We use product ingredients inherited from Shaw
    that are
  • recycled and recyclable to make products that
    are
  • sustainable
  • Eco Solution Q fiber and EcoWorx backing are
    among the
  • first ever Cradle To Cradle certified products
  • Eco Solution Q and EcoWorx backing can be
    recycled in a
  • continuous loop, again and again, forever

Eco Solution Q Premium Branded Nylon
  • Eco Solution Q premium branded type 6 nylon
    began
  • incorporating recycled content 1996
  • As a Cradle-to-Cradle product, Eco Solution Q
    can be
  • recycled in a continuous loop, again and
    again, forever
  • Eco Solution Q uses an average of 23 million
    pounds of
  • recycled content annually

Evergreen Nylon Recycling FacilityAugusta, GA
  • The New Patcraft Designweave operates a
    nationwide
  • collection system that supplies discarded
    carpet to our
  • Evergreen Nylon Recycling facility in Augusta,
    Georgia
  • The Evergreen facility uses patented technology
  • to convert nylon carpet into caprolactam, the
    raw
  • material used to make nylon 6

eco-fact By recycling Eco Solution Q, Shaw
saves enough energy each year to equal the energy
in 16 million gallons of gasoline
14

  • Nylon fibers are recycled over and over again
    without the
  • loss of any aesthetic or performance
    properties.

Reducing Our Footprint
We continue to look at multiple processes for
recycling both Type 6 and Type 6,6 nylon to
expand our recycling capabilities and increase
our recycled content We collected 28 million
pounds of caprolactam in 2007 and expect to grow
that number to 35 million pounds in 2008 and 40
million pounds in 2009
The Shaw Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility
produces 30 million pounds of caprolactam monomer
from 100 million pounds of nylon 6 carpet
waste We save about 2 trillion BTUs annually
compared to virgin monomer production
17
Type 6 and 6,6 Nylon
  • Both Type 6 and 6,6 nylons have dye sites. These
    are not
  • holes on the fiber surface that fill with dye,
    but rather
  • electrical charges that either resist or
    absorb color.
  • Carefully controlled tests, where all processes
    and
  • construction parameters were identical, have
    demonstrated
  • that fiber type has no impact on soiling rate.
  • The lower temperature requirements for the
    extrusion of
  • Type 6 nylon offers less pigment restrictions
    and greater
  • color flexibility.

18
Type 6 and 6,6 Nylon
  • Factors that influence the performance of a
    product, more
  • than the type of nylon are
  • fiber properties
  • yarn construction
  • carpet construction
  • color and pattern (collectively)
  • backing construction
  • quality of installation
  • proper maintenance

19
Type 6 and 6,6 Nylon
  • Shaw Fibers is the worlds largest manufacturer
    of Type 6
  • nylon.
  • Type 6 nylon provides exceptional color and high
  • performance characteristics.
  • Type 6 nylon has environmental benefits in that
    it can be
  • depolymerized and returned to the
    manufacturing process,
  • again and again, the closed loop process
    referred to as
  • Cradle to Cradle.

20
EcoWorx Tile Backing System
  • The industrys first 100 sustainable, non-PVC
    tile backing system
  • Polyolefin thermoplastic fiber and backing
    separation

EcoWorx Tile Backing System
  • Awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Award
    by the
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its
    environmental
  • and performance benefits
  • Backed by an environmental guarantee, The New
    Patcraft
  • Designweave will pick up EcoWorx -backed
    products, at no
  • cost to you, and recycle it into more EcoWorx
  • Contains 40 recycled content

22
EcoWorx Tile Backing System
  • EcoWorx backing helps our environment by simply
    being a lighter,
  • stronger alternative to PVC.
  • Lighter backing means fewer truckloads. Which
    means less diesel
  • used. Which of course means less carbon
    dioxide released into
  • our atmosphere.
  • Since its introduction in 1999, EcoWorx has
    saved Shaw Industries
  • 2,538,000 truck miles.
  • That is equivalent to 11.3 million pounds of
    carbon dioxide never
  • released into the earths atmosphere.

23
EcoWorx Performance BroadloomTM
  • The commercial carpet industrys first fully
    sustainable, non-
  • PVC, Cradle to Cradle carpet backing for
    broadloom carpet
  • products

grandchild is born.
27
Yellow Grease
  • At Shaw Plants 11, 14, and 16, we're working
    towards switching
  • over from natural gas to Yellow Grease (YG).
  • Yellow Grease is an alternative fuel that is
    collected from the
  • preparation of food.
  • After it is cleaned, it has the potential to be
    used as boiler fuel.
  • Yellow Grease is a renewable energy source and
    comparable to
  • natural gas in its pricing.
