Title: SMTF Controls

1
SMTF Controls
  • Dennis J. Nicklaus
  • Fermilab
  • ICALEPCS 2005

2
SMTF
  • SMTF Superconducting radio frequency Module
    Test Facility

3
SMTF
  • Main Goal Develop U.S. Capabilities in high
gradient and high Q superconducting accelerating
structure in support of the International Linear
    Collider.
  • Proton Driver, RIA, 4th Generation Light Source
    and other accelerator projects
  • Expanding upon existing SCRF expertise at
Argonne, Cornell, Fermilab Jefferson Lab, MSU

4
SMTF Collaboration
  • Collaborating Institutions and their
    representative
  • Argonne National Laboratory Kwang-Je Kim
  • Brookhaven National Laboratory Ilan Ben-Zvi
  • Center of Advanced Technology, India Vinod Sahni
(More institutions have been asked to join)
  • Cornell University Hasan Padamsee
  • DESY Deiter Trines
  • Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Robert
    Kephart
  • INFN, Pisa Giorgio Belletini
  • INFN, Frascati Sergio Bertolucci
  • INFN, Milano Carlo Pagani
  • Illinois Institute of Technology Chris White
  • KEK Nobu Toge
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory John Byrd
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory J. Patrick Kelley
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology Townsend
    Zwart
  • Michigan State University Terry Grimm
  • Northern Illinois University Court Bohn
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory Stuart Henderson

5
SMTF Controls People
  • Many contributors Ron Rechenmacher, Sharon
Lackey, Ruben Carcagno, Geoff Savage, Vladimir
Sirotenko, Vince Pavlicek, Gustavo Cancelo, Mike
Kucera, Fritz Bartlett, and Luciano Piccoli under
the direction of Helen Edwards and Paul Czarapata.

6
SMTF Goals
  • Provisional goal is to have three U.S. and one
European 1.3 GHz ILC cryomodules under test, with
beam, by the end of 2009

7
SMTF Fermilab Siting
  • Initial tests at Fermilabs Meson lab
  • Fall 2005 test of single 1.3 GHz 9-cell TESLA
    cavity (RF, cryo, no beam).

8
Fermilab Siting
  • Move the NICADD (Fermilab A0) photoinjector to
Fermis New Muon building to use as a test
    beamline
  • Produces low emittance, high-intensity electron
    beam

9
Controls Definition
  • Convened panel of experts in early 2005
  • Debated merits of ACNET, EPICS, and DOOCs
  • Recommendation All are suitable. Pick one
control system while recognizing there is much
EPICS expertise with the SMTF collaboration
  • Recognition of reality short term scheduled
goals imply a mix for now.

10
Important Notice
  • SMTF Controls ! ILC anything.

11
Current Status and Work
  • Cryogenics
  • LLRF
  • Modulator
  • Klystron Interlocks
  • Timing

12
LLRF Controls
  • DESY-provided Simcon FPGA-based LLRF controller
(single-cavity) with initial MATLAB interface and
in-progress DOOCS interface running on VME-based
    Sparc SBC.
  • DESY-provided ADC and DAC cards with DOOCS
    interfaces.

13
Cryo Controls
  • Replicate and enhance ACNET-based control over
    PLCs
  • EPICS EDM displays to Epics OPC interface to OPC
    Server to PLCs.

15
Modulator
  • PC/104 board with digital and analog I/O running
    eCos OS
  • In use for other Tevatron controls at Fermilab
  • EPICS ported to eCos for use at SMTF

17
Klystron Interlocks
  • Short term re-using IRM-based system (IRM
parameter pages) from previous experiment at
    Fermilab.
  • Replace with custom VME cards controlled by
    conventional EPICS VME IOC.

18
Timing
  • Industry Pack IP-177 8-channel delay timer
  • Common design in many applications at Fermilab
    and elsewhere

19
Conclusions
  • As expected, using a mix of several control
systems for the short term (IRM, EPICS, DOOCS,
    Matlab). Converging?
  • DOOCS contributions from DESY collaborators are
    integral parts of the system.
  • Lots of efforts in understanding DOOCS and EPICS
    at Fermilab.
