  • Introduced in April 2005
  • Builds on long-standing qualifications of
    Chartership and Fellowship
  • Two new qualifications
  • Certification
  • Revalidation
  • Emphasis on continuing personal and professional
    development
  • Increases access to professional qualifications

Certification
  • Aimed at para-professionals with
  • experience in library and information work
  • skills/knowledge gained through work-based
    training and other staff development
  • Successful candidates can
  • use the post-nominal of ACLIP
  • consider progressing to Chartership

Certification - requirements
  • Applicants must be Affiliated Members of CILIP
  • Category 1 applicants will have been working in
    library information work for 5 years (fte)
  • Category 2 applicants will have been working in
    library information work for 2 years (fte) and
    will have participated in work-based training or
    other staff development

Certification assessment criteria
  • All candidates must demonstrate
  • an ability to evaluate personal performance and
    service performance
  • an understanding of the importance of Continuing
    Professional Development
  • an appreciation of the role and contribution of
    library information services in the wider
    community

Certification assessment criteria
  • Category 1 candidates will be expected to
    demonstrate an appreciation of their personal
    technical and professional skills developed
    through practice
  • Category 2 candidates will be expected to
    demonstrate an ability to evaluate training and
    development activities and to demonstrate a
    growing awareness of the relationship between
    theory and practice

How to get started
  • Join CILIP
  • Look at the regulations on the CILIP website
    and in the printed handbooks
  • Download the templates from the website and start
    to complete them
  • Register for the qualification
  • Find a mentor (formal or informal)
  • Join the lis-cilip-aclip e-discussion list

What is required?
  • Submission is by portfolio
  • Need to reflect on CPD
  • what have I done?
  • what did I learn?
  • how did I apply the learning?
  • what benefits were there to the service/to myself?

What should be in the portfolio?
  • Application form
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement (4 x A4 sheets, including
    summary of 500 words) reflecting on personal
    professional development
  • Personal Development Plan (1x A4) indicating
    areas for further development
  • Supporting letter (normally written by Chartered
    Member of CILIP) giving achievements and
    indication of potential for agreed future
    development
  • Relevant evidence, e.g. certificates of training,
    copies of staff appraisal, staff
    development/training record

What happens next?
  • Applications are assessed by the CILIP Assessment
    Panel
  • Successful applicants
  • are given advice on proceeding to Chartership
  • receive a certificate and can use ACLIP
  • Unsuccessful applicants are given thorough
    feedback and advice on resubmitting
